What is WoW Classic?

World of WarCraft rewinds time back to 2006. This means it takes place even before the first expansion, The Burning Crusade. WoW originally launched in 2004, so we’re not back to square one yet. WoW Classic uses the Drums of War patch (1.12) as a starting point. From looting to constructions to looks and mechanics, WoW Classic was confirmed in 2006.

Combat is slower, more methodical and generally more dangerous. Navigating the map takes much longer than in the modern one WoW. Additionally, missions are simpler, with less chance of random events occurring mid-run. You may also have to do a bit of back-and-forth to figure out where you’re going and prepare for further backtracking. Your primary stats will look very similar to modern WoWbut the secondary stats are really different, since Blizzard has reworked that aspect of the build over the years.

All in all, vanilla WoW more effort needed to progress. Although the level cap is only 60 (instead of 120), you’ll spend a lot more time traversing the map to find dungeons, connect with other players, and play for loot. Even your crafting choices are more important because you can’t change your specs instantly. Everything is earned through hard work. But yes, you will have to spend a lot more time working towards your goals. But it can be rewarding.

However, Blizzard has implemented some technical changes to improve the experience. You can set macros and install plugins, right-click to report players, and see things clearly if you’re colorblind thanks to the colorblind settings.

Empires

Before creating your character, you need to choose an area. WoW Classic currently has 29 areas, a mix of normal PvE, PvP and combo areas. Before you jump in, you’ll see if the kingdom has a low, medium, or high number of players. Kingdoms with more players will require a longer queue. Just a heads up: wait times during launch week peaked at around 10 hours. It’s extreme, but be prepared for the possibility that you may wait hours to enter the kingdom. Here is the full list of kingdoms:

  • Normal (PvE): Ashkandi, Atiesh, Mankrik, Myzrael, Old Blanchy, Pagle, Westfall, Remulos
  • PvP: Bigglesworth, Blaumeux, Faerlina, Fairbanks, Herod, Incendius, Kirtonos, Kurinaxx, Kromcrush, Rattlegore, Skeram, Smolderweb, Stalagg, Sulfuras, Thalnos, Whitemane, Arugal, Yojamba
  • RP: Bloodsail Buccaneers
  • RP-PvP: Deviate Delight, Grobbulus

Players can have up to ten characters designated for each area, but you are limited to 50 characters overall. If you join a PvP kingdom with an Alliance character, you are locked into the Alliance in that area. This rule does not apply to PvE areas, so you can have Horde and Alliance characters assigned to the same area.

Features, not bugs

During the beta period, some players started reporting bugs they found to Blizzard. There must have been many players because World of Warcraft community manager Kaivax posted a “Not a bug” list. For example, quest objectives and points of interest are not displayed on the mini-map, and Gnomes and Bulls are indeed displayed in their respective dimensions. WoW it’s changed a lot since 2006, so it’s easy to see why a trip back in time would lead some players to believe things aren’t quite right.
