Extremely rare newborn silvery gibbon clings to mom in adorable pics

The Curraghs Wildlife Park took to Instagram to announce the birth of an “extremely rare” silverback gibbon cub. The park wrote that this is the third silvery gibbon born in that place. Along with the descriptive post, the park also shared a series of photos showing the newborn holding onto his mother’s tummy.

“We are delighted to announce the birth of a rare silvery gibbon in the Park! This is the 3rd baby gibbon born here since 2017. The little one is now just over 2 weeks old. ‘Slamet’ does a great job, as always she is a great mom!” wrote the park. In the next few lines, they added more about the family that lives in the park.

“This brings the family to a total of 5. With only 52 such gibbons in 9 EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums) this little one is an important gibbon in the Ex-situ Program (EEP), which is designed to maintain genetically diverse populations of endangered species,” added the park. They also thanked a person named Stephen Corran at PicsByCorraste for “his patience” during the photo shoot.

What do the pictures show?

The first picture is a close-up of the newborn. In the second photo, the little boy can be seen lying in the arms of his mother, who is trying to feed him. The rest of the pictures also show the cute interaction of the little one with the mother.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the silvery gibbon as an endangered species, the Independent reports. This species is native to the Indonesian island of Java. Currently, only 2,000 members of this species remain in the wild.
