Fact Check: Is Ifeanyi Adeleke Still Alive? Viral Video Is Misleading

If you don’t have much time to read the article

  • Ifeanyi Adeleke, the son of Nigerian Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, is not alive and the video you saw on social media is fake. He died after drowning in the pool on October 31, 2022 and his body is still in the morgue.

Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of one of the greatest musicians Africa has ever produced, David Adeleke, died young, making several headlines in the media around the world.

We have previously exposed many false accusations regarding something related to David, even before the death of his only son.

We reject claims that he was in any way responsible for the deaths of those close to him for years.

None of that is true, and neither is a new claim being shared on Facebook, Twitter and TikTok: that Ifeanyi is alive and could have been revived with the help of an oxygen bottle.

“Davido Son ifeanyi is alive OXYGEN wake him up ooo davido and chioma confirm the news puflash”, reads the text on the images and videos of David, Ifeanyi and Chioma shared on Facebook on November 4.

Several people have read this message, but it has not yet been reported as a fake news or misinformation on Facebook.

Ifeanyi Adeleke drowned in a swimming pool after leaving her cook and nanny in the living room for a week when her mother and father were traveling separately, with her mother in Ibadan and her father in the United States.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement officials took all the domestic employees and took them to the police station for questioning.

The nanny and the cook were eventually detained, while the others were released.

Police said they will carry out an autopsy on the body of the late Ifeanyi.

Verification/confirmation of facts

Using keyframes from the viral video as a starting point, we conducted a reverse image search and discovered similar videos posted by a Nigerian living in Europe on YouTube and Facebook under the name “Tessy Gist TV.”

After further investigation, we found other posts shared by Tessy Gist TV that said Davido tweeted that Ifeanyi was alive, and another that she claimed was posted by Chioma, stating that her son was alive.

He also included an old clip of David’s experience of being in lockdown due to COVID-19 in his post, with the poster falsely claiming that the musician had just posted it.

NEWSTARS Education discovered a number of posts circulating on major social media that we believe were plagiarized from Tessy Gist TV.

On Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, the hashtag #ifeanyiiialive is trending even as this investigation takes place.

Conclusion

A NEWSTARS Education investigation reveals that the viral video showing Ifeanyi Adeleke alive in a hospital bed is misleading. The little boy seen in the video is not Ifeanyi and Davido; Chioma has not made any official statements since the death of her son.
