FFXIV: Shadowbringers E7 raid guide: Fend off deadly origami birds

In Final Fantasy XIV, in the case of Eden’s Verse, the third fight is where things take a noticeable bump in difficulty. While it relies on some other matchups throughout the game, The Idol of Darkness likes to use portals to turn regular attacks into mind games similar to the battle clock mechanic that introduced Gaia in 5.0. Appropriate, right?

Idol of Darkness can be confusing and somewhat complicated when you go in blind, but with a proper understanding of the mechanics, you can take every bit of information as it comes and piece it together by the time the damage starts to wear off.

Phase 1 – Movement Words

After a short cooldown, The Idol of Darkness casts Empty Wave for heavy damage for the entire raid. It then attaches to a tank for Unshadowed Stake, a linear tank buster that will need to steer the target away from the group.

Inspired by that fight at Mount Gulg, Words of Motion invites four groups of these paper birds to cross their respective paths on the battlefield. As usual, the first to arrive will be the first to sweep, so it’s just a case of sliding from second to first as the first two swarms take off. This is the main combat mechanic, so relax reading their spawn times.

Immediately after that, the blue and red portals will arrive in the middle and edges of the arena. Look for them and take them. Words of Motion will be used again. If the portal occupies the attack path, it will exit through a portal of the same color.

This is like another use of the attack. Movement Words will wait to exit the respective portals just as they would without them, so a two-attack sequence becomes a four-attack sequence at the same tempo. Note where each will go, when and where they will appear later. You’ll soon have another mechanic to include in this combo.

To make this first one easier, you can hide behind a portal and then run to a place without a portal. However, the next set won’t have a central portal, so don’t rely too much on that gimmick.

Phase 2 – Words of the Night

The second phase begins when Voidgates appear under your feet. You’ll teleport to the right of where you’re facing when it resolves, so settle in whenever you won’t be kicked out of the arena. False Twilight will then place red markers under each player, so prepare to run away and then come back for a 4/4 stack split, another Void wave and an Unshadowed Stake on the tank.

Next is the Unjoined Aspect mechanic, turning Words of Movement into Words of Night, adding light and dark elements to the attack. Watch out for a light or dark buff in your lane and aim to get hit by the opposite color Word of the Night. This will replace a better performance with another, so prepare to do the same in the next set. Getting hit with the same color as your buff will hurt.

Phase 2.5 – Cessation of Idolatry

The boss splits into two idols, which should pick up both tanks and bring them to the center. Voidgates then try to mess with your support; position yourself to land in the middle or near the corner and you should avoid the AoE donuts that every idolatry throws right after. If both mobs are not in the middle at this point, expect panic.

Spread out and away from the mobs to position Silver Shot drops and your own melee AoEs to break them up. Stack up and protect/boost for Seraphic Illumination and you’ll go to stage 3.

Phase 3 – Words of the Night and Voidgates

Now that you’ve seen Words of Motion paired with Voidgates, it’s time to tackle Words of Night and Voidgates. Just remember that the Night Words all travel at the same time, so there’s not as much detour here as you might think — just a pause before they all fly back through whichever Voidgate they entered. Remember to aim for the opposite color Word of the Night with each. Watch where they go and figure out where they will reappear.

After that, Away with Thee is played, shuffling Voidgates and piles of meteors underfoot. Only one person must finish in each pile, but the more the better. Survive the raid and tank destruction after this, and you’ll send The Idol of Darkness into a panic.

Like the end of any fight in Eden so far, the last 10-20% HP means suffering a little bit of everything. Expect a Words of Night/Voidgates/False Twilight/Stacks or Words of Night/Away with Thee sequence until the boss or team breaks the bucket.
