Interior Minister Christophe Castaner indicated that Tuesday’s planned protests against police violence would be tolerated.

Planned protests in France on Tuesday to honor the memory of George Floyd and “the fight against racism in the police”, although prohibited by law due to the health crisis, will be tolerated, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said.

Protests, “they are not [allowed] in facts (…) but the world of emotions, which is healthy in this topic, exceeds the merits of the legal rules that are applied,” said Christophe Castaner to micro BFMTV/RMC. “I invite everyone to pay attention to the practice of gesture barriers, but we will not to ask for the reaffirmation of the ban, which is the law that was passed, and there will be no sanctions and PV for participating in the event,” he added.

“By declaring that emotions overcome the law, Christophe Castaner is seriously endangering public order. His comments are unworthy of the Minister of the Interior. In the Republic, force must remain the law,” LR president Christian Jakovu reacted on Twitter.

“The Minister of the Interior announces that the rules he is obliged to enforce do not count. After releasing the police, who are now subject to the presumption of guilt, he refuses to enforce the law: the state no longer exists,” emphasized the president of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen.

Christophe Castaner announced on Monday measures to improve the behavior of law enforcement, where there is “zero tolerance” for racism.

Gatherings this Tuesday

many gatherings in memory of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died of suffocation on May 25 under the knees of a white police officer in Minneapolis, United States, are being organized on Tuesday in the world and several French cities. They gathered about 23,000 people in France on Saturday, according to the interior ministry.

In Paris, the association SOS Racisme called for a “gathering of a solemn statement” at Trg Republike on Tuesday at 6 p.m., which will also be “a reminder of our determination to fight racism here in the police and in any other sector”.

Several trade unions (CGT, FSU, Unsa), political parties (EELV, PS, BIA, CPF), student organizations and students (Fage, Unef, UNL), associations and non-governmental organizations (League for Human Rights, MRAP, Cran) associated with this call.
