Georgia man slapped with $1.4 million speeding ticket

A Georgia man got the shock of his life after he found himself facing a staggering $1.4 million in speeding fines. Yes, you read that right. On Sept. 2, Connor Cato was driving home when he was pulled over by the Georgia State Patrol for going 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Cato claims he was aware he was going to get a speeding ticket, but had no idea the fine would amount to more than $1 million, WSAV reports.

Cato further told the news outlet that when he called the court to inquire about the amount, thinking it was a mistake, he was told he had to pay it or appear in court in December. Anyone caught driving more than 35 mph over the speed limit in Savannah must appear in court, where a judge will decide the exact penalty. Criminal defense attorney Sneh Patel told WSAV it was something he had never seen. “I’ve never seen anything like this, never. I mean, I can’t imagine someone having to pay $1.4 million for not showing up for a speeding ticket.”

However, local authorities soon informed Cato that this amount was only a ‘placeholder’. Savannah City Council spokesman Joshua Peacock told USA TODAY, “The fine for speeding can only be determined by a judge during a court appearance and cannot exceed $1,000 plus state costs.”

Peacock stated that the e-citation software automatically enters a base amount of $999,999 plus government fees because superfast people have to appear in court. For Cat, the total amount was 1.4 million dollars.
