Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed beginner’s guide: 8 tips and tricks to get started

Illfonic has made a name for itself in a very specific niche. They are masters of creating asymmetric games based on big IPs such as Friday the 13th, predator hunting grounds, and now Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. These games split teams into one “monster” that must fight four or more players to win. Each side has its own mechanics and goals to win, which makes these types of games extremely addictive and deep.

WITH Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, the teams should be obvious to anyone familiar with the franchise. On one side, there’s a ghost trying to completely haunt a certain location, while four Ghostbusters are on the lookout for them, trying to catch them. However, that’s much easier said than done – no matter which side you’re on. Ghosts have multiple ways to haunt a place – plus, there are other factors to consider – and Ghostbusters have their own problems to juggle beyond ghost hunting itself. Everyone knows not to cross streams, but here are some more important tips and tricks to get you started Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

Stick together

Like most asymmetric games, a multi-man team, in this case the Ghostbusters, is only as strong as a unit. Just like in the movies, meeting the ghost itself probably won’t end well for you. Even if you manage to catch it in your stream, you won’t be able to trap it while you’re trying to groom it.

If you don’t have another attacker to watch your back, you can be exposed to ghost attacks, which vary depending on the type of ghost you’re facing, but are never good. Also, there’s a lot more to do as a bandit than aim and fire your proton stream at a ghost. Since it takes time to change all your gear, having a dedicated member with a trap and another guide with a PKE meter will help you catch quickly.

Also, when ensnaring a ghost, remember that while multiple attackers can help trap a ghost, only the first person to tether it can affect its movement. Everyone else who hits them with their jet will delay how fast the ghost can escape, but it’s up to the first one to trap it and lead the ghost into the trap. Since all proton packs will eventually overheat, if the initial smasher has to release its flux, control will pass to another smasher to lend its flux to the cause, meaning you can delegate responsibility if you need to cool your pack.

Find a gear cart

Before you start exploring and hunting the ghost, note the equipment cart near your spawn point. This basket of goods contains very important tools, such as gadgets and spare traps in case they run out. Traps are the most important though, since returning to the cart is the only way to restore them.

Secondary gadgets are also very helpful to carry around. Things like Ionizer Pods allow you to slow ghosts that pass through their AoE, while VAD is essential for moving around the map quickly. Communicate with your team and try to get different gadgets to complement each other.

Use your PKE meters and find the cracks

Each map will have three cracks that you, as the Ghostbusters, will want to find and destroy as quickly as possible. This can be done in two ways: by directly locating and destroying the rifts, or by capturing the spirit itself. These cracks are essentially extra lives (or extra ghost lives?) for the ghost player. If you capture a ghost and the rift is still on the map, it will reappear there. Also, if the ghost manages to fill the haunting meter, any remaining cracks will shorten the time you have left to make a final effort to capture the ghost.

The only way to find cracks, and ghosts for that matter, is to use your PKE meter. You never know for sure what you’re tracking, but if it’s motionless, chances are it’s a crack. It also won’t tell you if what you’re following is on another floor or not, plus ghosts can haunt objects as decoys to activate your PKE.

The rifts are not open, but hidden inside objects on the map that the ghost can move.

Remember that the PKE also has a small explosion that you can set off if the ghost surprises you. This will stun them for a second, which isn’t long enough to switch to your proton pack and tether them, but if your teammates are with you, they’ll have a chance.

Do side hustles

This is a kind of internal meta-game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed which gives you access to other objectives that you can complete during matches for bonus XP. Normally, this could be seen as a distraction from the core ghost hunting that the game is supposed to be about, but progression is key to unlocking new items and ghost variants, plus fun cosmetics to adorn your players with.

You must select these side hustles before the game while in the firehouse by interacting with the book. Here you will be shown several contracts, plus daily and weekly challenges. These tend to have longer requirements or multiple steps, but are worth a good chunk of extra XP each, plus a huge bonus for completing the entire contract.

Although not listed as Side Hustle, another thing to make grinding XP easier is to always grab those spores, mold and fungus around the maps. Simply collecting them will add some bonus XP when the match is over, but once you hit a percentage threshold for each, you’ll get bonus XP rewards on top of that.

Occupy several rooms at once

As a spirit, you have one main goal, but many ways to achieve it. That goal is to fill up the haunted meter for the building and escape without getting caught, but you’ll also notice another meter that records how haunted the particular room you’re in is.

While each NPC you scare and item you haunt will add to both gauges, the most efficient way to build up your overall haunted meter is to completely haunt certain rooms, rather than spreading your terrors around the map. Of course, it’s not that simple. The longer you stay in one place, the faster attackers will be able to determine your location and try to capture you. It’s best to choose several rooms to chase between, ideally on different floors, to throw off attackers, make it take longer for them to chase you, and allow you to alternate between them.

Prioritize your splits

As important as it is for the bandits to find the cracks, it is just as important for the spirit to protect them. This is, again, your second, third and fourth chance to come back if you get caught. Once you get caught and there are no more splits, that’s it. They also act as mini-teleporters that you can roll around the map with.

As soon as the attackers find and start destroying the crack, you will receive a notification message. Unless you intend to max out the haunt meter, it’s always best to try to protect it. Other than trying to fight the attackers, which probably won’t go well if the whole team is there, your best bet is to move the rift to a new facility.

Avoid looking

Bandits can see which direction you’re facing with their PKE gauges, making it difficult to hide for too long. Although it can’t let them know what floor you are on, they will eventually track you down. When this happens, your first priority must be to break their line of sight. Any tricks you have, like having an item to hide, won’t matter if they see you doing it.

A great trick is to break line of sight, stalk the object to imprint your spirit essence on it for the PKE meter to pick up, then completely escape to another room or floor.

Disable those proton packs

While you don’t have many offensive tools as a ghost, you do have some tricks to make life difficult for them. Each type of ghost has their own abilities that help with this, such as using slime, but your best bet is to sneak up behind them and temporarily disable their proton packs. It’s obviously not easy, but cutting off even one of their packs for a little while can mean the difference between walking into a trap and escaping.
