“With the growing popularity of garage sales on Facebook and other buying and selling apps, BPD has decided to offer the use of our parking lot for such trades,” the post said, adding: “Do not meet strangers at residences private or in areas you are not familiar with. The post was accompanied by an image showing a rather noticeable sign designating the parking lot as a place to exchange purchases.
While we may be disparaging the efforts of the Bellingham Police Department, it is an extremely good idea that other departments should implement. Thinking of traveling hundreds or perhaps thousands of miles to take advantage of the location of the Bellingham Internet Shopping Exchange can be inconvenient for non-locals.
If you don’t live in an area with the foresight to create such a convenient location, don’t despair. It’s unlikely that any police department will deny you the use of their parking lot for exactly this type of transaction, whether they have a fancy report or not. Just ask at the counter when you arrive, after arranging a location with a friendly vendor or customer.
