Google has tweaked its design for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, but they look almost identical except for the fact that they’re different sizes. On the front, there’s a sizable bezel at the top of the screen, but thankfully no notch. The bezel below the display is shaved compared to the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. You’ll still find the power button and volume control on the right edge, and the USB-C port on the bottom. The glass back is now solid color, although the rounded bezel is a slightly different tone for contrast. The camera module is the rounded square in the upper left corner, which sticks out just a little. There is no fingerprint sensor as the new Pixels support face unlock. They come in white, black or the new orange color.
As glass phones with metal frames that can wear and tear, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL are begging for a protective case. However, they are IP68 rated, which means that rain, spills and even accidental submersion will not cause permanent damage.

The Pixel 4’s screen is 5.7 inches, compared to 6.3 inches in the Pixel 4 XL. Both have a higher-than-usual 90Hz refresh rate, which makes everything look a little smoother. Both are also OLED displays that offer excellent contrast and good readability in most conditions. But the other advantage the 4 XL has is the higher resolution, which means 537 pixels per inch, compared to the Pixel 4’s 444 pixels per inch.

Perhaps the biggest upgrade for the Pixel 4 line is the move to a dual-lens setup. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL combine a 12-megapixel 28mm wide-angle lens with a 16-megapixel 14mm telephoto lens in the main camera. On the front, there’s an 8-megapixel single-lens wide-angle lens. The new telephoto lens lets you zoom in on subjects with far greater clarity than before. It offers 2x optical zoom, but by using a hybrid approach combined with Super Res Zoom on the software side, it can go further.
Google also offers Live HDR+, so what you see on screen is an accurate representation of the final image. There are also new dual exposure controls, so you can manipulate highlights and shadows using different sliders, white balance for more true-to-life colors, and a dedicated astrophotography mode for shooting stars. You’ll also find improvements to the Pixel 3’s existing camera modes, such as Night Mode and Portrait Mode.
The Pixel 4 and 4 XL have the exact same camera setup on the front and back, so there’s no separating them here.
