I went on Zoom earlier this month wanting to chat with Grace, who I know as the co-founder of Bakeup Beauty, the celebrity-favorite makeup line she co-founded with artist Jo Baker. For Grace’s music videos, especially her latest, “Disappear,” starring Mariska Hargitay, Grace and Jo come up with the craziest, most imaginative makeup ideas. They especially appreciate this song because it deals with mental health, a topic that Grace believes should be talked about even if it’s not always straightforward.
“I’m thrilled to have gotten over the pretty terrible depression I’ve struggled with at different times throughout my life,” says Grace. “But I definitely understand what it’s like to be in a situation where you really don’t see any way out for yourself,” she continued. They understand that not everyone has access to even the most basic level of care, but feel fortunate to have had a support system of family, friends and medical professionals. They declare, “I will do everything I can to remove the stigma and raise awareness through the art I create.”
Because Grace found music a “safe haven” in difficult times, they write songs to make other people feel less alone. When they’re having a bad day, they say, “I really like listening to super upbeat music.” Lady Gaga, Madonna and Taylor Swift are examples of this. However, they are of course not immune to the tear-jerking ballad: “I Loved Sobbing Adele Like Any Other Person.”
Law & Order: SVU actor Hargitay, a longtime family friend, joined Grace in the video. Simply, no one else in the world, in Grace’s opinion, could convey that message and that role better than Mariska. “It’s a song that means a lot to me,” she says.
