Grammys postpone Grammy ceremony, citing Omicron variant risk

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Grammy Awards were postponed Wednesday, several weeks before the ceremony in Los Angeles. Organizers said there was “too much risk” with the omicron variant. This could usher in another year of the awards season pandemic.

The comeback concert was originally scheduled for January 31 at the Crypto.com Arena, with live performances and an audience. However, a new date has not been set. After careful consideration with city and state officials, security experts, artists and other partners, The Recording Academy has decided to postpone its ceremony.

The Academy issued a statement saying that “given the uncertainty surrounding omicron variants, running the program on January 31 simply involves too much risk.”

The Grammy Awards were postponed last year due to concerns about the coronavirus. The show was moved from mid-January to mid-March. It was attended by a small audience of nominees and guests who gathered in and around the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Beyonce and Taylor Swift were the big stars of the night, but it was their live performances at the Grammys that set them apart from the rest of the awards. There weren’t a huge number of people and many performances were pre-recorded.

A statement from the academy said they look forward to the biggest nights in music in the future. This will be posted soon.

Finding a date could be difficult due to the presence of two professional basketball teams and an arena hockey team. In its statement, the Recording Academy did not mention a possible change of venue.

This announcement comes at the same time that the Sundance Film Festival canceled its live lineup on January 20 and switched to an online format.

Jon Batiste, versatile and gifted, is this year’s standout candidate. He received 11 nominations in a variety of genres, including R&B, jazz, American roots music, classical music and music video.

Justin Bieber and Doja Cat are tied for the second most nominations with eight each. They are tied for second place with eight nominations each.

The Grammy Awards could usher in a new round of awards in motion after another winter coronavirus outbreak. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are scheduled for February and the Oscars are scheduled for March.
