Consciousness is victory. But we are pushing for another great victory: justice. When the courts decided to rule in favor of the man who attacked me last year, people were horrified. I understand. What they didn’t know, however, was that even before we started, we were facing a protracted battle that could take years because Nigeria’s legal system is not prepared to help victims of sexual abuse obtain justice. Today I have a big update.
The police have completed the investigation. And he submitted his report to the Ministry of Justice in Abuja for the further prosecution of Biodun Fatoyinbo. He clearly has an argument to answer. But there was silence from the ministry. Stillness. Loud silence!
We wrote a letter, but we haven’t received a reply for more than a month. Instead, my lawyers and family found out about all kinds of manipulations and fake games that were being attempted to prevent the ministry from prosecuting immediately. Or even that the police report is doctored.
My name is Busola Dakolo, I survived one of the most terrible crimes: rape. My voice will not close. My case will not be silenced.
