Holy smokes, Batman! Honda’s NM4 dark cruiser returns

After a year off (perhaps spent in a secret underground lair), Honda’s sleek NM4 motorcycle returns for the 2018 model year. It first debuted at the 2014 Osaka Motor Show as the NM4 Vultus, causing a stir in the motorcycle world that eventually crossed over to Hollywood . A modified version of the newer NM4 appeared in a recent Scarlett Johansson sci-fi film A ghost in a shell.

The original limited-ride bike, with its feet-forward design, was a hybrid of a scooter and a cruiser. It is based on Honda’s Integra scooter, which itself has a motorcycle underpinning. The Vultus’ 745cc parallel twin engine was mated to a 6-speed dual clutch transmission. LED lights throughout complemented the anime-inspired styling. Although not directly performance oriented, it was a fun and passion project that took two-wheeled riding beyond the realm of enthusiasts and riders.

The NM4 Vultus is back as the NM4 for 2016 with a 670cc engine and new bodywork. The following year there was no production, but now it is back. The low seat height makes handling easier for new and smaller riders, while the feet-forward cockpit is relaxed a little into a more standard motorcycle position.

According to a press release from Honda, the front passenger seat converts into a folding backrest, and there are four integrated storage compartments. Combined with a body designed for wind protection, this bike should be a good under-the-radar cruiser.

The DCT transmission has standard and sport automatic modes, and can also be changed manually from the controls on the steering wheel. ABS brakes provide reliable stopping power.

A customizable 25-color LED panel displays transmission modes, mpg tracking and more.

“Time after time over the years, Honda has pushed the boundaries with unconventional styling models like the Pacific Coast, Rune, Big Ruckus and DN-01,” said Lee Edmunds, Honda’s U.S. motorcycle marketing communications manager. “NM4 is very much in that tradition, and while it’s not for everyone, that’s really the point; the model has proven to be a hit with a dedicated consumer segment from a surprisingly diverse range of demographics, including tech-savvy millennials as well as touring veterans and women. Those who buy the NM4 tend to put a lot of miles on them, so we’re delighted to welcome it as our first street bike for 2018.”

The NM4 is only available in one color to match the understated style of this bike: Matte Black Metallic. It will be available this June for $11,299.
