Horizon Forbidden West features grappling hooks and wall jumps

Players will have tons of new options when it comes to combat and passing Horizon Forbidden West. A PlayStation blog post detailing the new features coming to the game showed off some of the new abilities at the choice of protagonist Aloy, including Breath of the wild-esque Shieldwing, grappling hook, and Valor Surge finishing attacks.

Some of Horizon Forbidden WestThe game’s developers have already mentioned changes to traversal, including the Shieldwing, which players can use to glide long distances and free climb. Further developing Aloy’s suite of new movement options is the Pullcaster, which players can use to teleport Aloy to target locations. Players can use these tools in sequence, from launching with a grapple to gliding with Pullcaster and Shieldwing.

As for the combat, players will have access to some powerful moves that can be used to take down enemies quickly, although they will need to charge them up first. Called Valor Surges, these special attacks build up by successfully hitting enemies, charging up a purple bar on the game’s heads-up screen. There are 12 attack variants, “each representing and reinforcing a specific approach to the game,” according to the blog post. Each variant can be charged up to three levels, with higher levels taking longer to charge but dealing more damage.

Players will also be able to power up their regular weapons thanks to the game’s new workbench. Here, players can upgrade and strengthen weapons and clothing, unlocking new perks, modified slots, and more.

Horizon Forbidden West was supposed to launch this year but was pushed back to 2022. It will now be released on February 18 for PlayStation 4 and PS5.
