Nigerian film producer, director and actor, Kunle Afolayan, has shared his thoughts on a number of industry-related topics.
Kunle is one of the sons of the late theater and film director and producer, Ada Love. He produced and directed popular films like Irapada, The Figurine, Phone Swap, October 1, Roti, Omugwo, The Tribunal, The CEO, Mokalik, and The Citation.
So how do filmmakers make money?
Okay, you can make some money through the cinema, but when you leave the cinema, what are you going to do with the movie? But with streaming, if you go to Netflix now, you will see more than 100 Nigerian content there. Some of these films were acquired only for broadcast in Africa and perhaps the UK, and some of them were acquired for worldwide viewing. Netflix recently put out a press release, announcing that they just picked up some new movies for release. I mean the ones that were purchased as Netflix originals. And if the movie is a Netflix original, that means it’s being shown around the world, that means it’s going to be subtitled in about 50 languages. Interestingly, pirates can still copy these movies from these platforms and then put them on YouTube and some of their personal websites. I think it’s up to the filmmakers to find a way to remove those links if they can. It is heavy because it is spread over several links. So it’s hard to completely eliminate piracy, but if you’re actually monetizing your film in a legitimate way and think you’ve covered some of your revenue, at least you’ll have peace of mind knowing that all your hard work hasn’t. . It has not been wasted.
What do you think of the view that only actresses make money while the number of big girls flaunting their exotic cars and expensive mansions on social media continues to grow? What happens to men?
Nothing happened to the men. I think a lot of women in the industry are also entrepreneurs. If you go to their sites or blogs, they sell jewelry or clothing. Is the income from those clothes equal to owning a house? I don’t know, but different people have different ways of structuring jobs. For example, some of them are ambassadors for some of these real estate companies. I can make a deal and say, okay, be our ambassador for five years. This house is N40 million, okay, we’ll give you part in cash and part in exchange, so there are different ways to do the deal and male actors like AY and all those guys are doing well.
