How prestige works in Call of Duty: Vanguard

Working your way up the leaderboard in multiplayer is what makes any Call of Duty game so addictive. From the original Modern warfare to the latest entry, Call of Duty: Vanguard, we loved seeing those ranks grow and eventually max out. But the creators of this amazing series knew that people would get to that top tier, whatever it was, and still want more. So they cleverly created a way to keep those always looking for the next dopamine hit on the charts coming back for more: The Prestige System.

The prestige system is the core of the Call of Duty experience at this point. It has long been the ultimate sign of a player’s dedication to the game, and each game gives players a new reward for that dedication. The basic concept of how prestige works hasn’t changed too much from one entry to the next, but it has evolved quite a bit by the time we get to Call of Duty: Vanguard. If you’re interested in diving deep into this game’s multiplayer and want to know how prestige works and what you can get for achieving it, here’s a full breakdown.

What is the prestige system?

The prestige system first appeared with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In this game, once you reach the highest rank in the game, you are given the choice of prestige or not. If you did, you’d go back to level 1 again, losing any unlocks you had to earn them again. However, you received a special emblem that showed you reached the highest rank and decided to start over. Not only that, but also if you reach the maximum rank again, you can enter a different prestige with a different emblem. In fact, you could do it 10 times in the first game before you hit the limit.

Since that introduction, the prestige system has evolved to have various positives and negatives in achieving prestige. Regardless, it always works as some kind of endgame system for players who push themselves to go above and beyond the normal ranks.

The prestige system has seen many changes since its introduction Call of Duty: Vanguardbut it’s not much different from how it was in the last game, Call of Duty: Black Ops — Cold War. What hasn’t changed since the beginning is that you’ll earn your first prestige rank after completing ranks 1-55 and getting all the weapons, accessories, and other unlocks that come with these levels. The negatives associated with achieving prestige — all your unlocks and progress are reset — are now not implemented in several titles and are also non-refundable Call of Duty: Vanguard. Since there are no drawbacks, you’ll automatically start the prestige system when you reach the required amount of XP, rather than deciding whether or not to engage.

Call of Duty: Vanguard combines your total player level with the XP you earn in multiplayer and Zombies mode. There are 55 common ranks to go through before reaching what they call seasonal levels as a substitute for player levels. At this point, your rank will be Commander, but it will also set you at prestige rank 1. To raise your new prestige rank, you will need to raise your seasonal level 50 times. For every 50 Season Levels you can earn, you get one additional Prestige Rank, and the maximum rank is the 200th Prestige Rank.

What do you get for each prestige rank?

For now, Call of Duty: Vanguard is technically in the preseason, so it will work a little differently until the official start of the first season. However, for this preseason, we know what rewards you can earn for achieving various prestigious ranks.

If you reach prestige rank 1, you will receive a sticker and skip the battle pass level. Reach rank 2, which requires you to reach season level 50, and you’ll get another sticker, weapon blueprint, and skip the second level of the battle pass. Prestige 3 is the highest tier you get rewarded for in the preseason and is just another sticker and a battle pass tier skip.

We won’t know what prestigious awards we’ll be getting until the first season officially begins, but odds are they’ll look something like these preseason awards.

How do seasons affect prestige?

The name Season Tier may have tipped you off, but you can’t take the time to reach 200 prestige over months and months of casual play. Every time a new season starts, your season level will be reset, but not your prestige rank. This means that if you achieve, say, prestige rank 2 and are at season level 66 when the new season starts, you will still be at prestige rank 2, but your season level will drop to 50. So if the season is coming up, finish and you are between prestige ranks, you’ll have to decide if you’re close enough to try to get to the next one before all that progress is lost, or accept that you’ll start over.

Each season has a certain number of prestige ranks that will be added. We’re starting with just the three mentioned, but Season 1 will have seven, and Season 2 reportedly has 11. Reaching the maximum prestige rank in any season will earn you the prestigious master rank, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep earning seasonal levels. Why would you want to? Well, once you’ve earned everything in the current season, every 50 season levels after you earn it will unlock everything from previous seasons that you missed.
