How to add family members to your Apple Music subscription

Apple Music is one of the streaming services for all things melodic and related to melody. Hosting over 88,000 million subscribers worldwide and featuring over 100 million tracks from today’s leading artists, Spotify’s nemesis has a lot to love.

If you’re a new subscriber, Apple Music gives you a one-month free trial period. After the trial period, memberships are billed on a monthly or annual cycle, with the most popular Individual plan being $11 per month / $109 per listen. While that’s on par with the average price of other music streamers, saving a buck here or there is never a bad thing. While students can get Apple Music for $6 a month, another way to save on your subscription is with Apple Music’s family plan for $17 a month.

In this guide, we’ll teach you how to set up Apple’s Family Sharing and how to add users to your account. Before you know it, you’ll have multiple family members streaming songs under one roof (and helping pay for the Apple Music premium).

Before you start

In order to follow the instructions in this guide, you’ll need a few things, some more obvious than others. First, you’ll need an Apple ID, which anyone with at least one iOS or macOS device or other Apple service should have.

Of course, you’ll also need a family subscription to Apple Music. If you’re setting up Apple Music from scratch, be sure to choose Family instead of Individual. If you want to change your Apple Music Individual subscription to a Family subscription, it’s a fairly quick process, and detailed instructions are available via the support section of Apple’s website.

What is family sharing?

Family Sharing is a convenient way to share content across a number of Apple services, including movies, iCloud storage, apps, and our focus today, Apple Music. For just $17 per month, account administrators can host up to six Apple Music users under one family subscription. Because everyone uses their own Apple ID under Family Sharing, everyone gets their own preferences and recommendations.

Best of all: When you enable sharing of purchases with Family Sharing, the whole family can share movies, shows, books and music — as long as the person making the purchase approves sharing for other members of the group.

Set up Family Sharing

Rather than operating independently, Apple Music’s family plan relies on Apple’s family sharing infrastructure. If you already have Family Sharing set up and just want to add new family members, skip to the next section. If this is your first time setting up a family plan and you’ve never used Family Sharing before, read on.

Set up Family Sharing on iOS

If you’re reading this article on your iPhone or iPad, you’re in luck: You can set up Family Sharing right now in a few easy steps.

Step 1: Open settings app and tap your name at the very top, or on older iOS devices, scroll down and open iCloud settings.

Step 2: Tap Sharing with family: Then tap Establish your family. From here, follow the instructions to invite and add family members until the setup is complete.

Step 3: Now all you need to do is invite a family member. If you’re using iOS 16 or later, go to settings and then Family.

Step 4: From here tap Add member icon in the upper right corner.

Follow the instructions to invite family members via messages. Here you can also create a Children’s account also for sharing, if your child does not have an Apple ID. You can also set parental controls for them.

Set up Family Sharing on Mac

If you’re using a Mac, setting up Family Sharing is just as easy or maybe even easier than using an iOS device. The steps are just a little different and are just a little different depending on your version of macOS.

Step 1: Find your way to your Mac System settings (Ventura or newer) or System settings (Monterey or earlier). You can find them by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left corner.

Open it settings app or click on the ever-present Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the screen, then select System settings. When the settings window opens, click on your name or Family or Sharing with family, depending on your version of macOS. For devices running macOS Mojave or earlier, you’ll click iCloud instead Family.

Step 2: Now find Sharing with family option — it is either by clicking on your name or it will appear Sharing with family menu right there. Either way, pick it.

Step 3: If you are setting it up for the first time, click Set up a family and follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 4: Now you need to add members. Simply click Add member (Ventura) or Add a family member (Monterey) then follow the on-screen instructions to invite members and select the services you want to share. As with the iOS steps, you can also create Apple IDs for children here.

Step 5: All you have to do is invite your family members to join your family. They will need to accept the invitation to start sharing your Apple Music and other subscriptions.

Start using Apple Music

Now you should be ready. All that’s left is for your family members to actually start using Apple Music. All they need to do is sign in to Apple Music with the same credentials they use for Family Sharing and they’ll be ready to start listening. However, every now and then things don’t go as smoothly as you’d hoped.

Troubleshooting

A common problem is when a family member uses multiple accounts and logs into Apple Music or iCloud (in the case of Family Sharing) with the wrong one. That’s the first thing to check if a person is having trouble accessing Apple Music.

Signing out and signing back in can sometimes resolve issues that prevent you or a family member from accessing your family subscription. First, try signing out of the affected Apple Music account and signing in again. If that doesn’t fix the problem, try doing the same with all your Apple services. If none of that works, try removing everything from Family Sharing and adding them back. This is a bit tedious, but following the steps above should take care of it quickly.
