How to add your ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet

Between credit cards, store loyalty cards, and ID cards, our wallets are fatter these days, and it makes searching through them to find the right card a real chore. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could show or scan your phone to someone instead?

Well now you can if you have an Android smartphone. Building on Apple, Google Wallet now lets you upload your driver’s license or government ID to your Google Wallet account, giving you a quick and easy way to show your credentials when needed. If you live in certain US states, that is.

You will still need to carry physical copies of these cards with you, in case additional validation is required. But even with that in mind, it’s a great time-saver when you don’t want to take your cards out of your wallet, purse, or bag. Here’s how to add your ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet.

How to add your ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet

Before you can add your driver’s license or government ID to Google Wallet, you’ll need to verify that it meets the device requirements. But they’re not particularly heavy, so don’t worry. You just need an Android device running Android 8.0 Oreo or higher (pretty much anyone with a phone bought in the last half decade). Then make sure that Bluetooth and nearby devices are turned on. Finally, you must have one of the screen lock methods enabled.

Once your phone is ready, it’s time to get started.

How to remove your Google Wallet ID or license

Since your ID is only stored locally on your device, you are not vulnerable to cloud storage hacking or anything like that. However, if you’ve tried it and found it’s not for you, or you’re just not comfortable with your ID on your phone, you can remove it.

Step 1: Start by opening Google Wallet, then find and select your ID.

Step 2 – Select the “More” menu in the upper right corner (looks like three vertical dots), then select Remove > Remove.

You can also remove your Google Wallet ID remotely by following these steps.

Step 1: Go to the My Google Account page.

Step 2: choose personal information > digital identification.

Step 3: Choose Digital ID management and choose Delete next to the ID you want to remove.

Step 4: Confirm the removal and it will be gone.

What you can do with your Google Wallet ID

This feature is currently part of a limited release and is not available in many places. As of this writing, ID card use through Google Wallet is accepted in the US state of Maryland and by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at many airports that support it.

To use your ID, you can use NFC to scan it the same way you would pay with Google Wallet, or you can set it to appear on your screen as a QR code for an officer to scan.

Which countries support Google Wallet Virtual IDs?

Very little at this point. Maryland is the only state where the Google Wallet ID card system is accepted as valid identification, although you can use it at various TSA checkpoints at certain airports. It has been confirmed that Arizona, Colorado and Georgia will receive support “in the coming months.”

Expect the feature to reach more US states and airports in the future, and we’ll update this guide as more areas become eligible.
