The first thing you’ll want to do is increase your odds of spawning a great Pokémon. You’ll need to start by trying to remember how many of certain Pokémon you’ve battled and how many of those particular Pokémon you have in your Catch Combo.
A catch combo is the number of the same Pokémon you’ve caught in a row at once. For example, if you’re hunting a shiny Vulpix, be sure to head to where the Vulpix spawn and catch as many as you can in a row. If you encounter other Pokémon while searching for Vulpix, run away and focus only on Vulpix. Catch combos will stop increasing your chances of running into a shiny Vulpix after you catch about 25. However, Serebii.net says this practice will increase your chances of finding a shiny Vulpix by 50%.
It’s also important to keep track of your battle count. The more you’ve battled a certain type of Pokémon, the better your chances of finding a Shiny. Every battle counts! If you’re struggling with 50, your chances of finding a great boost increase by 1.5%. After 100 battles it increases by 2%, 200 battles will increase your chances by 2.5%, 300 battles will increase your chances by 3% and 500 will increase them by 3% more. By checking your Pokédex, you can see how many types of Pokémon you’ve battled.
While hunting Shiny, be sure to wear a Shiny Charm to increase your chances of finding a Shiny in the wild. You can get this item from the Game Freak Game Director after completing your Pokédex. It will be at the Ionia Hotel in Circhester.
Using these three techniques, you will get approximately a 1/455 chance of finding Shiny. Although this number seems low, it is definitely better than the original spawn rate in Shiny.
It’s also worth mentioning that Sword and Shield also introduced a new type of Shiny Pokémon: Square Shinies. That’s right, there are two types of Awesome Pokémon in the Galar world, standard and square. You can tell that a Shiny Pokémon is a shiny square because the usual stars that indicate shine will be replaced by squares in the opening animation. Square Shinies are also not a different shade of Shiny, so you don’t have to worry about that.
For every Shiny you encounter in the game, it has a 1/16 chance of being a Square Shiny rather than a Standard Shiny. However, if you follow the Catch Combo method above, or defeat 25 of the same Pokémon in a row, those odds will turn to a 15/16 chance of finding a Square Awesome, but you’ll have a 1/16 chance of that Pokémon being a Standard Awesome.
How to breed awesome Pokémon

Growing Shinya is a little different. Many people will use the Masuda method, which is named after Junichi Masuda of Game Freak. Masuda was the director who added the feature to the game. This method requires obtaining a parent Pokémon from a player playing the game in another language and breeding it. When you use Pokemon from two different language games, there is a six times greater chance of a Shiny Pokemon hatching from the egg. However, the impact of this Shiny rate is still debated. Some players feel that it is not necessarily the language, but the region that is the deciding factor. However, the Masuda method definitely increases the chances of hatching a great baby.
The easiest way to hatch a Shiny Pokémon is to get your hands on a foreign Ditto. Grab a Ditto from your region and find someone in another country with a Ditto they’re willing to trade. This way, every Pokémon you breed from here on out will have Masuda Method chances behind them.
Additional notes on Awesome Pokémon
There are a few more things you need to know while you are dove hunting in Galar. Dynamaxed Pokémon in Max Raid Battles can be shiny, so players who like to participate in wildland raids have a chance to find a Shiny raid boss. You will be able to see cool effects on the enemy model as you face him. In contrast, you won’t be able to see if a Pokémon is glowing in the outside world. While in Pokémon Let’s Go we were able to see if a Pokémon was awesome or not before trying to catch it, that mechanic didn’t make it to Sword and Shield. You won’t know if a Pokémon is great until you start a battle.
When hunting for Awesome Pokémon, remember that you won’t find Awesome Pokémon that are above your catch level. If you find a Pokémon in the Wild Area that is too high level to catch, that’s okay. That Pokémon won’t be great so you won’t miss a thing!
Finally, from now on, Legendary Pokémon will not be great. Although the game will tease you with Shiny Legendary Spirits and models, it is impossible to find these Shiny Legendary Pokémon in the wild. None of the three legendary Pokémon in the Sword and Shield it can still be great, so don’t be jealous if you see a player with a Shiny legendary.
