Niantic continues to release new Pokémon for players to catch in Pokémon Go, and currently the mobile version of the popular monster-catching RPG series is already available up to the fourth generation of games. Strangely, this does not mean that all monsters from previous generations are available in the game. One such example is the unique and artistic Smeargle.
Smeargle originally debuted in the second generation of games — Pokémon Gold, Silverand Crystal. All other Pokémon from Smeargle’s generation are already available or were available at some point Pokémon Goincluding various Legendary Pokémon from those three games.
How to catch Smeargle Pokémon Go
You can’t encounter Smeargle overground in the traditional way you would most other Pokémon. Instead, you must perform certain steps in order for Smeargle to appear in your game.
What makes things even more difficult is that it takes a lot of luck for the Smeargle to even appear. It can be very difficult to make this actually happen. Fortunately, that’s where we perform. We have a step-by-step guide (with pictures) on how to catch a Smeargle Pokémon Go.
First, open Pokémon Go on your mobile device of choice. Once you reach the main overground where you see your character and all the wild Pokémon around you, open the main menu using the Pokeball button at the bottom of the screen. From here, select the “Pokémon” tab.
This tab contains all the Pokémon you currently own in the game, except for those you have transferred to Let’s go games or the Professor for sweets. Choose one of your Pokémon, preferably one with a move list you like. While the Pokémon you choose here don’t affect your chances of finding a Smeargle, they will dictate the move list your Smeagle will have.

Once you’ve selected your Pokémon and gone to their page, select the small camera icon in the upper right corner of the screen. This will take you to the Snapshot feature where you can take pictures of Pokémon.
When you’re ready and have your Pokémon in Snapshot mode, simply snap up to 10 pictures in a row. When you’re done taking pictures of your selected Pokémon, you’ll want to exit Snapshot using the button in the upper left corner.
This will take you to the results screen. It may take a moment or two until all the images are displayed. Once there, you can scroll left and right to view all the pictures you’ve taken. The goal here is to find the picture where Smeargle photobombed her.
Smeargle by photobombing one of your pictures in Snapshot mode is the only way to make a Pokémon appear for you in the game. Luckily, you don’t need AR+ mode on your phone for this. Unfortunately, there is one problem with getting Smeargle to photobomb one of your pictures Pokémon Go. The problem with this is that finding Smeargle in your photos is completely random.
You could potentially take 500 photos with your Pokémon and Smeargle still won’t photobomb one of your pictures. This is a relatively rare occurrence so you may need a little patience for it to happen. Lucky for us, we found our first Smeargle in our seventh photo.
Once you find it, exit Snapshot to the main overworld and Smeargle will appear there. You can then select and capture it. Keep in mind that he can run away, so be sure to bring some berries and the best Pokeballs you have.
Smeargle list of Pokémon Go moves and glitches

Smeargle does not have the Sketch move in Pokémon Go. Instead, his moves are based on the Pokémon he took a picture with. If the Pokémon you’re photographing has Tackle and Quick Attack, Smeargle will have Tackle and Quick Attack when you catch it. This means you’ll need to think carefully about what moves you want the Pokémon to have.
Additionally, there are some user-reported issues that are worth mentioning. If the Smeargle you catch has different moves than it should, exit and restart the game and it should be fixed.
If you happen to have a picture of the Smeargle Photobomb, but it doesn’t appear above ground, you may have to exit and restart the game. Some users even report having to wait a few minutes for it to appear. If you want to catch a second Smeargle or more, we recommend you wait a few hours or until the next day as otherwise it seems like it will take a long time for another one to spawn.
