How to complete Patches’ questline in Elden Ring

Elden Ring is not a sequel to the Dark Souls series, which itself is only loosely related. However, in between Elden RingDark Souls games and even Demon souls and bloody, there was one constant we could count on to show up. We are not talking about mechanics or the great sword of the Moon, but about man—man who has followed his nature as a coward, a greedy traitor again and again, and driven us into the deadliest traps he can lure us into. That man is, of course, the infamous Patches.

Most people expected patches to come out Elden Ring. After all, he has become a kind of mascot for FromSoftware at this point. It wasn’t long before people first found him in the game, but were left with a rather unsatisfying ending to his interactions. It turns out that we haven’t seen everything that Patches has in store for us yet, and only with patch 1.04 for Elden Ring is his questline finally complete. If you’re looking to get some sweet revenge on sneaky Patch for all the tricks he’s played on you, here’s how you can complete his questline in Elden Ring.

First encounter with Patches

Patches are not welcome at the round table. We like to think it’s because everyone else knows he’s not to be trusted, but whatever the reason, it means you’ll have to hunt down this dirty man in the open world. Fortunately, you can go straight to it almost immediately after starting the game. It hides in Murkwater Cave, which you can find by following the river north that ends in Agheel Lake, keeping an eye on the east side to find the entrance.

As you explore the cave, Patches will ambush you, as he tends to do. Fight him, but he will surrender before you finish the job. So you could you decide to kill him here and end his quest early, but where’s the fun in that? Let him live and he’ll offer to sell you some goods while he’s in the cave, including Margaret’s Manacle, which can be a big help against said boss in Stormveil if you’re struggling.

However, if you do decide to kill him, you’ll get his bell to buy gear, plus his unique spear and armor.

For now, choose to forgive and forget and move on to opening the newly spawned chest. Of course, this is a trapped chest that will lead you to the Mistwood Ruins. If you return to Murkwater Cave, Patches will disappear and move on to the next stage in his quest.

Find patches in Liurnia

Patches will next perform on the road to Liurnia. He will be sitting by the campfire on Scenic Isle and has added a few new items to his inventory that you can purchase. You can also talk to him about a few other NPC quests, plus learn about a secret way to enter Volcano Manor, though it’s definitely not recommended. It is, of course, a near death trap. Otherwise, there’s not much to be gained from Patches here.

Patches does his usual tricks on Mount Gelmir

Just based on the fact that you’re up on the cliffs of the mountain, anyone familiar with Patches should have a pretty good idea of what’s going to happen. You can spot Patches just north of First Mt. Gelmir Campsite Site of Grace hiding in the bushes next to the glowing stone path. If you miss it in the bushes and just follow the glowing stones, which you very easily could because they lead you straight to the item, don’t worry. The first conversation with him will only convince you, really, that he is not up to anything nefarious. Of course, as soon as you approach the edge of the cliff, Patches will pull his signature move and kick you over the edge. He will also warn you to stay away from Volcano Manor.

Along with the very deadly basilisk enemies, which can damn you within seconds if you’re not careful, there are some decent items to loot here while you’re there. Either after killing the basilisks and teleporting out, or dying, return to Patches and accept his completely sincere apology, plus another warning not to go to Volcano Manor. I wonder where we should go next?

Regroup at Volcano Manor

It’s not easy to get to, but enter Volcano Manor and start the Tanith questline by talking to Tanith and agreeing to become one of her assassins. The patches will cool down at the entrance, again offering you some new items. You can also ask to hear more about him in person if you’d like.

It will remain in place until you complete the first request to assassinate Tanith. When you’re done, go back and talk to Patches again, and he’ll give you the letter for the assassination he wants to carry out. While he certainly doesn’t deserve any favors from you at this point, indulge him and fulfill his request to kill the Great Horned Tragoth. Once you’ve done that, talk to him again and let him know the deed is done, for which he’ll reward you with the Magma Whip Candlestick weapon.

To progress with Patches’ quest, you must next fully complete the Tanith quest started earlier by completing all the kills and then defeating the boss Praetor Rykard. When that’s done, everyone, including Patches, will leave Volcano Manor.

Death in a shadowy castle?

It’s very easy to miss Patches’ next location on the small bridge at Shaded Castle, a small fort north of the Altus Plateau. The bridge he’s lying on is actually the one that leads to the boss of the area, so you can easily go through the tunnel and miss him. If you beat the boss, just use the Castellan’s Hall Site of Grace to reach him in no time, or make your way to him via the Shaded Castle Inner Gate Site of Grace. It’s kind of tucked away near one of the rows of statues, apparently on its last legs.

When you talk to Patches, he’ll give you Dancer Castanets to give to Tanith, and then he looks like he’s dying. This is where, before patch 1.04, his story came to a somewhat anticlimactic end.

End his quest where it all began

Now, if you go all the way back to the beginning, to where Patches first tried to pull you out with his own hands in the Murkwater Cave, you’ll hit a boss fog wall blocking your way into the room. Go through the fog, but there will be no boss there — just a treasure chest. Of course, this is obviously a trap, but go ahead and open it to get Patch out for another fight. He was expecting new prey, not you, and this time he will surrender almost immediately. You will now learn Patches legendary Crouch gesture.

Leave and return here to have Patches start selling his wares again, now complete with everything he’s ever had or will ever have to offer. If you attack him now to anger him, but let him nearly kill you, you can also learn the Crawl for Mercy gesture.

However, now is the time for you to complete the Patches without regret if you wish to do so. He’ll drop his bell so you don’t miss any of the items he has to sell, plus get a spear and leather armor that you can’t find anywhere else.
