The Nintendo Switch Lite works differently than the standard Nintendo Switch. In particular, you can’t actually switch the console between handheld mode and base station mode. Part of the reason for this is that the controls on the Switch Lite can’t be separated from the system itself. This gives the Switch Lite a lower price and allows for much greater portability.
However, this design choice does not mean that the Joy-Con controllers are completely incompatible with the Switch Lite. In fact, with the right accessories and a few tips, you can play with the Switch Lite in desktop mode and control it with the Joy-Con controllers. Here’s how to use the Joy-Con controllers on the Nintendo Switch Lite.

Before connecting the Joy-Cons to the Nintendo Switch Lite
You’ll need a few accessories before you can use the Joy-Con controllers with the Nintendo Switch Lite. The first are the Joy-Con controllers themselves.
They come in packs of one or two with Joy-Con strips for horizontal play. We recommend getting the two pack as this will allow you to play all Switch games with Joy-Con as some do not support single Joy-Con play.
If you plan to play with other people in games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxethen you should pick up a second pack of two Joy-Con controllers.
Step 1: Next, you need to buy a charging station for the controllers because the Joy-Cons cannot be charged using the Switch Lite. There is a four-controller charging station that you can get online or at most major retailers that is powered via a USB connection. It even offers battery level indicators for the controllers.
When you’re not using the Joy-Con controllers, you should store them in the dock so they’re always ready to go.
Step 2: If you’re going to play your Nintendo Switch Lite using the Joy-Cons, you’ll need something to hold it upright since it doesn’t include the mini stand of its predecessor. We recommend the HORI Dual USB Playstand for its charging and connectivity features. However, any stand that puts the Switch Lite in an upright position will do.
Step 3: This step is optional, but if you want more than a real controller feel, it’s recommended that you get a Joy-Con holder, which will allow you to slide your Joy-Con into a mold that looks like a traditional gamepad. They are hard to come by these days, as are most accessories for the Nintendo Switch, including the system itself.

Pair the Joy-cons with your Switch Lite
After charging the controllers, take the left and right Joy-Con and prepare to connect them to the Nintendo Switch Lite.
Step 1: Turn on the system and select Controllers tab at the bottom of the home menu.
Step 2: Choose Change the grip and order option. Your Switch Lite is now ready to pair with your Joy-Cons.
Step 3: Press the sync button for a second or two on the Joy-Con controller you’re pairing. It’s along the rail, so remove the Joy-Con strap if you already have one on your controller.
It should pair after a few seconds
Step 4: You can then choose which control configuration you want to use by holding down the L and R buttons on the controllers. If you are using two controllers, press L on the left and R on the right. If you’re only using one, turn it on its side and press the small L and R buttons on the fence.
At this point, you can put the Joy-Con straps back on your controllers.
When you put the Switch Lite into sleep mode, the Joy-Con controllers should automatically disconnect. However, they should still be synced, so just tap the home button or face button on each when you’re ready to reconnect to the Switch Lite.

Can you use the Pro Controller with the Nintendo Switch Lite?
Gamers can play with the Pro Controller out of this world with Switch Lite. You simply have to follow the same process as if you were playing with the Joy-Cons. Gamers will quickly notice that the gameplay functions feel remarkably similar to using the Pro Controller when in desktop mode on the original Switch.
To reduce setup time and effort, we recommend pairing the Pro Controller with USB (if your setup supports it). The game also works best if you’re using a hub device approved and supported by Nintendo. This particular arrangement will allow you to charge your system and will include a useful stand. To begin, place your Switch Lite on the stand and connect your Pro Controller with a USB cable. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to start the game.
