Streaming giant Netflix has now broadened its horizons by trying its hand at video game distribution. Netflix is striving to expand its horizons instead of sticking solely to streaming. Netflix is smart enough to invest in the field of gaming and has created services dedicated to the Netflix Games app on Android. The goal is to diversify revenue streams amid the narrow streaming space and make gaming offerings an indispensable component of the entertainment package.
Netflix games for Android on sale
After positive feedback from the VR demo Eden Unearthed, Minecraft’s story mode, and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Netflix decided to make a foray into gaming. Netflix has its game face on with 5 titles currently available. The 5 new Netflix Android games on offer are
- Stranger Things: 1984 – Complete missions, collect items moving between Hawkins. It has nice retro graphics.
- Stranger Things 3: The Game – The player can choose one of twelve characters from Season 3 and go on an adventure alone or with friends.
- Teeter Up – Developed by Frost Pop, you must pick up the ball by moving against gravity and the laws of physics.
- Shooting Hoops – Again, developed by Frost Pop, it’s a basketball minigame. The payer has to play in the basket by hitting the ball with arrows and beating the levels.
- Card Blast – Developed by Rogue Games, the game is dedicated to poker with a Candy Crush flavor.
Netflix started its ambitious adventure in Poland last August with only 2 games based on the popular Strange things series. In a month, Netflix added 3 more titles Shooting hoops, swinging up, and card explosion to your kitten with an introduction to 2 more countries: Italy and Spain. The idea behind the launch of Netflix games in these 3 countries targets the most active mobile gaming generation.
Please note that the video games are not related to the movies or series by name anywhere. Not even Netflix is the creator of these games. Instead, it licensed titles from its own developers. I mean, Frosty Pop for shooting rings and stagger up; and Rogue Games for Card explosion.
These games are not for hardcore gamers. Instead, they are great for casual gaming. Netflix is arguably focusing more on its entry into the gaming niche and building an average player base.
How to download Netflix games?
The prerequisite to download android games from Netflix is that you have to be a subscriber. Any of the 5 listed titles can be downloaded for free on Android phones for Netflix subscribers only. One needs to tap on the selected title in the list on the official Netflix app and you will be redirected to the Google Play Store where it is promoted for download.
Downloaded Netflix games are available on the home page of the Android device as well as in the Netflix app. Netflix games appear similar to streaming shows in the catalog. Netflix also claims to have minimal lag while streaming. It offers controller support and allows you to play with your friends.
No in-app purchases are required if one has a Netflix subscription. There is no additional cost to purchase the game when you have a membership. Netflix promises that there will be no ads while you play, but there will be recommendations while you browse.
The game library is currently available to players in Spain, Italy and Poland. Netflix games are limited to Android platform only.
The question that arises is whether the new company will be a disappointment, considering the strong competition. When Netflix announced its arrival in the gaming industry, people expected it to compete with big names like Google Stadia, Xbox, and Amazon Luna.
But judging by this release, it seems Netflix is just testing the water here. But hopefully they will work to improve their game catalog and make the title development and distribution experience easier.
Netflix requires its players to download the game, but has no plans to support cloud gaming yet. This is a bit disappointing, as some of the big names in the gaming industry require a lot of storage space that can’t fit on the phone’s storage. This will prove to be a bigger problem when Netflix expands its devices to include smart TVs, which only have 10GB of storage space on average.
