How to draw on Google Docs to add doodles, sketches, and more

Sometimes pictures are better than words, or at least a good accompaniment. You may want to include a sketch, illustration, or other type of drawing in your Google Doc. Google offers a drawing tool that you can access directly from Google Docs or separately to create and insert the sketch you need.

Depending on whether you want your drawing just for the current document or for use outside of Docs, here’s how to draw on Google Docs in two different ways.

Use the drawing tool built into Google Docs

If you only plan to use the drawing for the current Google Doc, you can create it directly through the app. The sketch will not be saved to Google Drive for external use, but will still be editable.

Step 1: Visit Google Docs, sign in with your Google account and open your document or create a new one.

Step 2: Place the cursor in the document where you want the drawing. Navigate to Insert > Drawing in the menu and select New.

Step 3: When the drawing tool opens in a pop-up window, use the options on the toolbar to create your drawing.

with Actions menu, you can use tools like Word Art for fancy text and guides for stringing items. You can select lines, shapes, text and images using the toolbar.

For freehand drawing, use Line drop-down arrow on the selection toolbar Scribble.

Step 5: You will see the drawing appear in your document.

If you want to change the drawing later, select the drawing Edit on the floating toolbar below it, or double-click to reopen the drawing window.

Use Google Drawings and insert your sketch

If you want to spend more time on a drawing or simply save it to Google Drive for use outside the document, you can use Google Drawings. Although it works similarly to the Google drawing tool above, you can go directly to Google Drawings.

Step 1: Visit Google Drawings and sign in with your Google account to start drawing.

Step 2: Start by giving your drawing a title in the upper left corner. By default the name is “Untitled Drawing”.

To draw freehand, select Insert > Line and choose Scribble or use Line drop-down arrow on the selection toolbar Scribble.

Step 6: Find your drawing and select choose.

Step 7: You’ll see a prompt to link to a source or insert an unrelated image.

  • Link to source: If you want the ability to easily edit the drawing, select this option. Then you can choose Open source in the upper right corner of the image in Google Docs to make changes in Google Drawings at any time.
  • Insert Unlinked: If you don’t plan to make any changes, you can choose this option. If you change your mind later, you can make changes in Google Drawings and then re-insert the updated image into Google Docs.
