Use Word’s ‘Send to Kindle’ feature

The easiest way to export a Word document to your Kindle is to use Word’s built-in “Sent to Kindle” feature.

Step 1 – Open the Word document you want to send to your Kindle in Word for Windows or Word for Mac. The Send to Kindle feature is not yet available in the web version of Word, but Microsoft plans to introduce it in the future.

Step 2: choose Archive > Export > Send to Kindle.

Step 3: You will then be asked to sign in to your Amazon account. This is so Word can connect to your Kindle. You will also be asked to approve the submission from your computer to your Kindle.

Step 4: Next, decide how you want the file delivered to your Kindle. Your options include submitting “As a Kindle Book,” where the font size and page layout will be adjustable, just as they would be with a native Kindle eBook. It also supports handwritten notes with Kindle Scribe.

Alternatively, you can send it “As a Printed Document”, which maintains the appearance and formatting of a Word document. You can use this to write directly on the page using Kindle Scribe.

Once you have decided which one, change the corresponding box and select Send.

Note: However, whenever you make changes to a document on your Kindle, if you send it back to your computer, those changes won’t be recorded. Microsoft plans to add support for this additional layer of interaction in the future.

Step 5 – Wait a few minutes and your Word document should be available in your Kindle library. If it seems to be taking a while, visit Amazon.com/sendtokindle to see the status of the file.

Why can’t I use the ‘Send to Kindle’ command?

Microsoft released the Send to Kindle feature for Microsoft Word in April 2023. It began rolling out the feature with its Insiders on its beta channel. The feature may not have been added to your version of Word for Windows or Word for Mac yet. Try updating your Windows installation and Microsoft 365 to see if that adds the option.

How else can you send Word files to your Kindle?

If you can’t or don’t want to use the Send to Kindle feature to send a Word file (or any other document) to your Kindle, there are a few alternative methods you can use.

  • Use Email for Kindle: Then go to Manage Your Content and Devices on Amazon settings > Personal Document Setup. Set the email from which you want to send an email to your Kindle in your Approved Email List for Personal Documents. Then simply send an email to your Kindle email address from an approved address with the document as an attachment and it will appear in your Kindle library.
  • Use a USB cable: Connect the USB cable to your Kindle and the other end to your computer. Then, using File Explorer, copy or drag and drop the document into your Kindle library.

Not convinced this is the method for you? Google Docs is also great for sending files to Kindle. Take a look at our Google Docs vs Word comparisons.
