How to fix the Google Drive refused to connect message

Google Drive is one of the best cloud storage providers that offers its users the flexibility to access data from almost any device, anywhere in the world. However, there are certain cases where it fails to load with the error message “Google Drive refused to connect” or “drive.google.com refused to connect”.

This error can occur when using any Google office app (such as Docs, Sheets, or Slides) when using multiple Google accounts. If you are facing such a problem, we are here to help you. Here is a quick step by step guide on how you can tackle this Google Drive connection problem.

Use incognito mode

As mentioned, one of the reasons why this error occurs is that multiple Google accounts are synced with your browser. Using an incognito browser window is a quick fix for Google Drive connection problems. Please note that this is a temporary solution and when you close the incognito window, you will no longer be signed in with your Google account.

Step 1: Open Chrome, then open an incognito window. It is usually found in Three points menu in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Next, open Google Drive by entering drive.google.com in the address bar.

Step 4: The “Drive refuses to connect” error should now be resolved.

Sign out of multiple Google accounts

Another solution for Google Drive refusing to connect is to sign out of any account you are signed in to from your browser. This usually helps resolve any disputes, since you’ll only be accessing Google Drive with one account at a time. This is how you can do it.

Step 1: Open Chrome and open Google Drive by entering drive.google.com in the address bar.

Step 2: Click on your google profile icon in the upper right corner to show all the accounts that are synced.

Step 3: Then click on the button that says Sign out of all accounts.

Step 4: You will be asked to confirm your action. Click on Continue to sign out of all accounts.

Step 5 – After signing out of all accounts, open Google Drive again and sign in with the Google account that was having trouble connecting. You should now be able to access your drive.

Clear your browser’s cache and cookies

Another solution is to clear your browser’s cache and cookies. These temporary files are stored on your computer to improve the user experience and website performance. It would be a good idea to delete them from time to time or whenever you have trouble browsing. This is how you can clear cache and cookies in Chrome. (If you’re using a different browser, here are the steps to clear your browser’s cache.)

Step 1 – Open Google Chrome and click on Three points menu in the upper right corner of the browser window.

Step 2: Click settings in the drop down menu.
