How to get and upgrade the FFXIV Shadowbringers Skysteel tools

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 5.25: Shadowbringers Finally Gave Light to Warriors shadow bearers the relic weapon they wanted since its release. However, craftsmen and collectors were not left out. One of the most time-consuming activities in the game is available to everyone, and we’ll show you how to get started with your Skysteel tools.

Like the Battle Class Relics in this expansion, you get your Skysteel tool for practically free. Just open the chest to the desired class and you will have a usable tool right in your inventory. You can get one for each class you’re at level 80 for a fee, which makes it a decent way to get into high-level crafting if you’re new to level 80. Upgrading them will take time, though. We’re not talking about days yet, but it won’t be the most fun way to spend the first few hours of your free time.

How to Unlock Shadowbringers Skysteel Tools

FFXIV skysteel tool unlock

Unlocking your first Skysteel tool is pretty simple. All you have to do is switch to your desired crafting/gathering class and teleport to the Foundation. From there, take the aetheryte to The Brume and down to the entrance to the Firmament. Next to the guy who normally introduces you, there should be another guy with a quest marker above his head. Talk to him for a bit and he will eventually ask you to meet him near the Skysteel factory. Go back there, have a long conversation with the others present, and you will receive your first Skysteel tool.

Depending on whether you are a crafter or a collector, the next step will be different. We have divided them into two different sections.

Disciple of the Land Skysteel Tools (Course Collection)

FFXIV Reunion

Skysteel tools start life at iLvl 440. They have some respectable power, but they aren’t the best gathering tools you can get right now. However, they will take you through Diadema. With a little work (and then a little more), you can increase this to 455 and eventually 475, surpassing the current vise platform.

Step 1: Skysteel +1 requirements

For collectors, this first step is a real grind. New entries have been added to your meeting record, so you’ll want to check them out to see where you’re headed. You will need to collect several hundred high-quality materials and another hundred normal-quality scraps. However, it is not as bad as it seems.

Nodes are common and all have generous buffs applied to things like pickup attempts and pivot rates. Combined with gathering food like coffee cookies and copious amounts of Hi-Cordial, this shouldn’t take more than two to three hours. Just put Disney+ or Netflix in the background.

For anglers, you should pick up a few stacks of Denys’ Signature Skyball lures before you head out. This lure helps ensure that you get the correct item to upgrade.

Necessary materials

  • Mining: 340x Rare Specific Obsidian (HQ) + 120x Rare Specific Ore Sand (NQ)
  • Botany: 340x Rare Specific Latex (HQ) + 120x Rare Specific Fossil Powder (NQ)
  • Fishing: 40x Thinkers Coral (HQ)

Step 2: Dragonsung Tool Requirements

The next step is another routine. Who would have thought? After a small upgrade to iLvl 445, the move to the 475 Skysteel tool is quite tricky. It’s more of the same as the previous one, but you’ll collect more loads of different items. The same principles apply here, but you should expect a job that lasts three to four hours. Once you get the items, Denys will trade them for an upgraded tool.

Necessary materials

  • Mining: 510x Unusually Specific Dark Matter (HQ) + 180x Unusually Specific Flamboyant Stone (NQ)
  • Botany: 510x Oddly Specific Amber (HQ) + 180x Oddly Specific Orb (NQ)
  • Fishing: 60x Dragonspine (HQ)

Disciple of the Hand Skysteel Tools (crafting courses)

FFXIV Skysteel Crafting Tool

Skysteel tools start working at iLvl 440. They aren’t the most powerful crafting tools in the game right now, but they are likely to be over time. With a bit of work, you can upgrade these tools to iLvl 455 and then back to 475, beating the current scrip kit on offer.

Step 1: Skysteel Requirements +1

For crafters, the procedure is a bit less simple. You have to use your tool to create dozens of unique recipes. The materials needed for crafting are purchased with yellow slips of paper, so be prepared to put in a bit more work if you don’t have them.

Required materials:

  • Drvodjelja: 20x strangely specific petrified ore
  • Blacksmith: 20x Unusually Specific Rivets
  • Armor: 20x strangely specific wire
  • Goldsmith: 20x Weirdly Specific Whetstone
  • Tanner: 20x Unusually Specific Leather
  • Weaver: 20x Rare Specific Moonbeam Silk
  • Alchemist: 20x Unusually Specific Synthetic Resin
  • Culinary: 20x unusually specific seed extract

Step 2:

Dragonsung Tool Requirements

The second step of this Skysteel Relic Tool upgrade process is more of the same. Literally. You have to do more of something completely different. Once you have these crafts, take your Skysteel +1 Tool to Denys to trade them for the Dragonsung Tool.

Required materials:

  • Woodpecker: 30x weirdly specific axis
  • Blacksmith: 30 Unusually Specific Equipment
  • Armor: 30x Unusually Specific Chainmail
  • Goldsmith: 30x Unusually Specific Gem
  • Tanner: 30x Unusually Specific Veil
  • Weaver: 30x Unusually Specific Velvet
  • Alchemist: 30x Strange Specific Glass
  • Cook: 30x Unusually Specific Seed Meal

How to get additional tools from Skysteel

FFXIV skysteel tools buy window

If you really want to prepare for disaster once the additional upgrade steps come out, you can choose as many different Skysteel tools as you like. Whether you’re a crafter or a collector, you can purchase additional tools from Denys at the Skysteel Factory for 80,000 GIL each.

These will be base models, so you’ll need to follow the steps above to upgrade them to the current max. It’s a lot of work, and you’ll only earn more when the next steps are released in future patches. If you just need a cheap tool to help you scrape together the cash for something better, this isn’t a bad buy.
