How to gift a new game on Steam
Previously, it was possible to send a game to anyone with an email address, and the message included instructions on how to set up a Steam account and download your new purchase. You can now only gift new games to people who already have a Steam account and are on your friends list.
Step 1 – Make sure your friend has a Steam account.
Step 2 – If you want to buy the game for someone who doesn’t have a Steam account, you’ll need to set up a new account and download the Steam client.
Step 3: Once set up, you need to go to the Friends dropdown menu. choose add friend and search for your username.
Step 4: Invite them to become your friends. Once they accept your request, you can send them the game.
Step 5 – Find the game you want to donate to the Steam store, either directly in the client or via the web portal, and select add to cart. If you already have the game in question on your account, the message “Buy this game as a gift for a friend” will appear just above the purchase option.
Step 6: Choose Buy as a gift.
If you already have the game, buy for yourself it will fade out and become unresponsive because you can no longer have multiple copies of the same game.
Step 7: Select the recipient from your friends list. You can decide to schedule the delivery for a later time and date if you want it to arrive late and be a surprise for a certain occasion.
Step 8 – Personalize your gift by filling in your friend’s name and writing a message. It can be anything from a simple happy birthday or happy holidays to a heartfelt letter or a fun note.
Step 9: Once you’ve personalized your gift with a message, press Continue and proceed to the normal purchase screen as if you were purchasing the game for yourself. Then it’s up to your friend to accept the gift. Once it’s added to your library, you’ll get a notification.
How to gift a duplicate game on Steam
Valve recently changed Steam’s giveaway policy to crack down on key resellers and people who circumvent regional price differences, so you can no longer buy and hold game codes indefinitely. However, any remaining code you may still have is still there and can be issued as before.
