One at hand, no Pokémon game will ever force you to delve into deep game mechanics to have fun and beat the story. Even in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl, you can mostly only get by knowing the advantages of the type. IVs are essentially your Pokémon’s stats. Just because you have two Pikachus, for example, doesn’t mean they’ll be identical since they’ll each have their own IVs that make one potentially better than the other. Trainers looking to build the best possible team must consider IVs in addition to all other factors, such as team composition, for the combat advantage they need to be the best. It may seem a little intimidating to newcomers, but increasing IVs is not as complex as it sounds. What are IVs?

If you’re not familiar with IVs in general, the name alone probably doesn’t give you any idea of what they are or why they’re important. We already mentioned that IV stands for Individual Values, but that name doesn’t tell you anything either. What they are, in short, are random stats that each Pokémon gets that are hidden from the player. These are determined by several factors, such as the Pokémon’s base values, their EVs (Effort Values), and nature.
IVs come on a scale of 1 to 31, with the higher the number, the better the stats. There are six different stats, each with their own IV rating: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. Of course, you’ll want a Pokémon with 31 IV in every stat, but the odds of that happening naturally are too low to count. There is an increase in IV.
How to check IV

Before you start increasing IVs, you need to know what your Pokémon’s IVs are to begin with. As mentioned, the IVs are initially hidden from the player, but you gain access to the IV verification system after defeating the Elite Four. Head to Snowpoint City and use the ship to travel to Survival Island, where the Battle Tower is located. Once inside, talk to the NPC standing near the computer. He will unlock a new referee function while using Pokémon boxes.
Once that’s unlocked, use the computer or open your Pokémon Fun me and a hit R. Scroll to your Pokémon list and press Plus button twice to use the referee function. It will break down what your chosen Pokémon’s IVs are using with the phrase. Here’s what each term means in terms of the actual IV number:
- Best: 31 IV
- Fantastic: 30 IV
- Very good: 26 to 29
- Pretty good: 16 to 25
- Decent: 1 to 15
- Not good: 0

How to increase IV

Farming will be the main method to increase IV. When you breed Pokémon, the IVs of the parent Pokémon are given to the child. The most tried and tested breeding method for high IVs is to get a Ditto with the highest possible IVs since Ditto can breed with any other Pokémon in the game except Legendaries. To breed Pokémon, simply place the two parent Pokémon together in the Pokémon Nursery in Solaceon City.
To speed up this process significantly, you should make sure your Ditto is holding the Destiny Knot item. This will guarantee that 5 out of the 6 IVs a Ditto has are passed down to offspring instead of the normal 3 out of 6. Since we’re using Dittos with IVs stronger than the Pokémon you want to improve, we want as many of their stats passed down as possible. You can pick up the Destiny Knot on Route 224 when you are able to go through Victory Road.
As you breed Pokémon, keep checking their stats to see when they’ve exceeded their parent’s IVs, then trade them to become the new parent. The key here, however, is to eventually get Dittos with the best, or 31, IV ratings in all stats. One Ditto doesn’t have to be perfect in everything as long as you have one works have 31 in each IV stat so you can swap them and combine those stats into one Pokémon.
For starters, you’ll need a Ditto with as high IVs as possible. The most reliable place to get Dittos is Canalave City. Use Super Repel and Poké Radar to find nearby Pokémon. Don’t bother with any other than Ditto. Repeat the process, but make sure you are only catch Dittos to increase your Chain Encounter. The more Dittos you catch in a row, the better their IVs are likely to be. It’s wise to save before starting this process, as well as after each Ditto caught, in case you accidentally break the chain.
