Chances are, if you just updated Windows 10 to version 2004 (also known as the May 2020 Update), this version of Microsoft’s browser is gone. It is being replaced by a newer version based on Google’s open source Chromium code. However, here are the instructions for the original version if you don’t plan to update Windows 10 anytime soon.

To silence the card directly, just click on Loudspeaker icon parked next to the page name on the card. You will then see an “X” next to the speaker icon, which means there is no sound. To turn on the sound, click on Loudspeaker icon again.

Alternatively, right-click the tab and select Turn off the card on the drop-down menu. Repeat the process to turn the sound back on.

Chrome Mobile Disable soundImage used with permission of the copyright holder

Mobile browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Firefox typically pause video and audio when you switch to another tab — even on tablets — to conserve battery life. This means you won’t find any way to directly mute tabs as seen in the desktop versions. In most cases, the sound is already muted by default.

However, Chrome for Android has an interesting fix to mute all web pages so that their sound doesn’t automatically blast in the theater while you’re browsing the web during a boring movie. Here’s how:

Step 1: Tap the three dots Menu button.

Step 2: Tap settings on the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap Page settings.

Step 4: Scroll down and tap Sound.

Step 5: Tap the switch to enable all pages to play audio (blue), or tap to disable (grey).

If you disable sound, you can add exceptions to the rule to allow certain websites, such as YouTube, to play sound.

Step 6: Tap Add a site exception option.

Step 7: Enter the address of the site you want to allow.

Step 8: Tap Add finish.

Likewise, if you enable sound on all sites and want to block a specific site from playing sound, follow the last three steps again to add the site to your blacklist.

Another way to block audio playback on a specific website is as follows:

Step 1: Tap lock icon next to the website address.

Step 2: Tap Page settings listed in the drop-down panel.

Step 3: Below Permissionstouch Sound.

Step 4: Tap Block and you are done.
