How to remove a login password on Windows 11

Your password is your key to Windows 11 because it protects your files and important information. However, there are some cases where you might want to remove your Windows logon password.

One such case is when you share a computer with someone and don’t necessarily have anything private on your system. Although we don’t recommend it, removing your password can also mean faster logins to your computer.

If you’d rather remove that layer of system security, here’s how you can remove your Windows 11 login password.

Some notes

Before we begin, we want you to keep a few important things in mind. If you signed in to your Windows 11 PC with a Microsoft account, you can’t easily remove your sign-in password or PIN. This is for security reasons. You will always be forced to have some form of password with a Microsoft account. You can only remove login passwords on accounts created locally, or as Microsoft puts it, with an “offline account.”

However, we suggest you consider buying a computer with Windows Hello built-in, or set it up after purchase if you can. These computers may use an infrared web camera to scan your face or use your fingerprint to log into your computer. You can also buy external Windows Hello webcams and fingerprint readers.

This technically removes your login password or PIN as you will never have to type anything on the keyboard. It also helps make your computer more secure, reducing the risk of someone guessing your password and getting in.

Remove Windows 11 login password

If you have set up your Windows 11 PC with a local (offline) account, then you can follow our steps below on how to remove your login password. Again, these steps don’t work with a Microsoft account for security reasons.

Step 1: Choose Start menu icon and then select Settings gear icon.

Step 2: Select in the Settings app Accounts in the sidebar. Then choose Registration options.

Step 3: Below Application methodschoose Password.

Step 4: Choose To change button below Password category.

Step 5: Enter your current password and select Following.

Step 6: Leave everything else blank and select Finish it.

Step 7: Close the Settings app. Your login password will now be removed.

Now that your password has been removed, you will no longer need to enter it at the Windows 11 sign-in screen. You should be signed in automatically after you start your computer. Or, if you’re sharing your computer, you’ll just need to click your profile icon to sign in.

Once again, however, it is not secure to log into Windows 11 without a password. Others can gain access to your files. And if your account has administrator privileges, those with bad intentions can also use your account to access other people’s files. It is best to use a strong password or Windows Hello. We have a guide that can help you choose a password manager that is also secure.
