How to reset the screen on your Tesla

Tesla cars aren’t perfect, but they do have some serious advantages over other cars. Perhaps one of the most important facts is that Tesla creates excellent software that allows users to quickly and easily control the climate, car settings and more, all from a sleek center console screen.

But when that center display isn’t working, which is definitely something that can happen, you may not be able to change your car’s most basic functions. A frozen screen can make you feel completely helpless.

Does this happen to you? Here’s how to reset the screen on your Tesla.

Reset the screen on a Tesla

Most problems you encounter with the Tesla infotainment system can be fixed simply by resetting the infotainment system. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to do, and the process is the same no matter what Tesla model you have.

Please note that during the reset process, you will not be able to see anything on the screen such as your speed, or even hear your turn signals. Therefore, we recommend that you stop and do not drive during the reset process.

To reset the infotainment in your Tesla, follow the instructions below.

  1. Move the car in the parking lot.
  2. Press and hold both wheels on the steering wheel until the screen goes black.
  3. After 30 seconds, the Tesla logo should appear and the infotainment system should reset. You can then use the screen as intended.

Restart Tesla itself

Sometimes just resetting the infotainment system isn’t enough to get your Tesla back into shape, and you’ll need to reset the car’s systems as well instead. Assuming you still have access to the car’s software, follow the steps below.

  1. Make sure you are parked and in a safe place to stay for a few minutes. Close all the doors.
  2. Get underway Controls > Security and Protection.
  3. press Turning off button.
  4. Wait a few minutes without touching anything while your car resets its systems. Be patient! Even things like stepping on the brake pedal or opening a door can interrupt this.
  5. After waiting two minutes, press the brake pedal to activate the car.

Restart Tesla without using the screen

If you don’t have access to any software on your Tesla and need to perform a hard reset, your method will vary slightly depending on your model. Follow the instructions below to perform a hard reset on your Tesla.

  1. Park the car in a safe place and close all the doors.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal, both dials, and both buttons on the steering wheel if you have a Model S or X. If you have a Model Y, press and hold the brake pedal and both dials. Press and hold all until the screen turns back on.

You should now be able to use your Tesla normally. However, if you can’t, you’ll need to make an appointment with Tesla for a repair.
