How to set up a Blink Outdoor Camera

The Blink Outdoor Camera is a powerful option for home security. It provides 1080p resolution and streaming and, if you have a reflector camera, up to 700 lumens of illumination. The only drawback is that setting it up can be a bit tricky, but we’ll explain exactly how to do it.

Install the Blink Sync module

The first step in connecting any Blink device to your home is to install the Blink Sync module, which is responsible for passing commands and network details to your Blink devices.

Step 1 – Tap the + icon in the top right corner of the Blink app.

Tap the + icon to add a new device.

Step 2: Tap Blink wireless camera system.

Select the type of device you want to add.

Step 3 – Scan the QR code located on the back of your Sync Module or enter the serial code manually. (You may need to give Blink access to your phone’s camera.)

Step 4: Give your Blink system a name, then tap Made.

Give your Blink home system a name.

Step 5 – Wait for the Sync Module to start flashing blue and the green light remains solid. Once you do, tap Discover the device.

Step 6: The Sync Module will generate a Wi-Fi network starting with BLINK-XXXX. Touch* Join*.

If the sync module is not working, you may need to reset it.

Step 7 – After the Sync Module joins the network, you will see a list of 2.4GHz networks in range. Tap your network and enter the password.

Step 8 – If successful, you will receive a notification that a new sync module has been added to the system. Tap Made.

Add cameras to your system

Once you’ve installed the Blink Sync module (probably the most frustrating part of the process), it’s time to add the camera.

Step 1 – If the camera is new, you will need to unscrew the back panel and insert the batteries. Use the included tool to unscrew the back panel, but if you’ve misplaced that tool, a butter knife works just as well.

Step 2 – Then tap on the + icon in the top right corner of the Blink app and select blink wireless camera.

Tap the + icon to add a new device.

Step 3 – Scan the QR code inside the camera’s battery compartment. Note: Prepare the back plate. After the camera scans the code, it will start searching. You need to fit the back plate and screw it into place (in the correct orientation) for the contacts to connect. The camera will flash red if it is on.

Step 4: Choose a camera system.

Give your Blink home system a name.

Step 5 – If the camera is found and added, you will see a message at the top of the screen that says “Camera successfully added”. Tap Following.

The Blink outdoor camera also includes mounting hardware. While it’s possible to screw it into place, we found that the no-drill method works just as well if you have vinyl siding. Just slide the mount under one of the plates and make sure it clicks, then attach the camera.

If you need to screw the bracket into place, the process is no different. Use the included screws (and hollow wall plugs if necessary) then slide the camera into the wall mount.
