The TCL Q6 is an intriguing television. It’s a very affordable QLED TV, even in larger sizes. And it’s a Google TV — that is, it’s powered by the Google TV operating system, so you might find that it already has everything you could run on it built in, negating the need for any other hardware like a streaming device.
But you still have a few choices when it comes to setting up your TCL Q6. Let’s look.

First steps
Whether you’re going to use your TCL Q6 in basic mode or as a real Google TV, there are three quick steps that are universal to this process.
Step 1: Choose your language (English, French or Spanish).
Step 2: Select your region or country (US, Canada or Mexico).
Step 3: Choose whether you want to set up as Google TV or as Basic TV. Continue reading for instructions on both methods.

How to set TCL Q6 in basic mode
This method is quite fast and simple, because you will be using the TCL Q6 as a basic TV, without logging into your Google account. That doesn’t mean you’ve completely run out of smart TV options — TCL has some of its own built into the operating system that don’t require the use of a Google account. But if you’re planning to use another device with your TV — like a Roku or Fire TV Stick or Apple TV — then this is the route you want to take.
Step 1: Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
Note that you can skip this step if you want (look for the button at the bottom). But we recommend that you connect the TV to the network at least once so that it can download all important updates. But you don’t have to connect it to the Internet to work as a Basic TV.

Step 2: Accept the Google Play and TCL Terms of Service.
Yes, you still have to accept them even if you don’t intend to use it as Google TV, because Google’s software still powers the whole experience.
Step 3: Pair the remote control according to the on-screen instructions.

Step 4: If you haven’t connected the TV to your home network, you’ll be prompted to set the time zone (if you’ve allowed internet access, it’ll automatically pull this).
Step 5: Accept the TCL User Agreements and/or choose to share diagnostic data (this option still appears even if the TV does not have Internet access).

Step 6: Choose (or not) to accept automatic updates to the TV’s stock software.
Step 7: Choose Done.

Set TCL Q6 as Google TV
If you want to use the TCL Q6 fully — that is, as a full Google TV with all the extras and apps that come with it — this is the method you want to use.
Keep in mind that there’s a lot you can do with your phone, whether you have Android or iOS. But if you don’t, you can also sign up on the TV itself. It’s just not that easy.
We won’t walk you through the whole process because a good part of it can be done on the phone, and Google can change what it looks like at any time. But you’ll get the idea here.
Step 1: Choose Set up Google TV on the screen that gives you the option.
Step 2: Choose whether you want to set up Google TV via your phone or on the TV itself.
Step 3: If you chose to complete the setup on the TV itself, enter your Google username and password. (And, hopefully, your two-factor authentication code, which you should definitely use.)
Step 4: If you have decided to set it up on your phone, launch it Google Home application

Step 5: Go to Devices tab. Touch To add button.
Step 6: Choose New device and from there follow the rest of the on-screen instructions.
Another thing to keep in mind: If you choose to set up Google TV via your phone, you may need to authorize some things on your phone — and then again on the TV after you go through the initial Google setup. It’s double and a bit embarrassing, but you didn’t do anything wrong.
And for the most part, the TCL Q6’s setup process is pretty intuitive (especially if you’re only going to use it as a basic TV). This will take a few minutes and hopefully you won’t have to do it more than once. But if you do, we can also help you reset your TCL Q6.
