The subtitles are great. They help viewers follow dialogue in movies and TV shows in a language they don’t understand, allowing us to enjoy content from around the world. And let’s face it, subtitles can also come in handy in situations like quiet late-night viewing or following sportscasters on TV in noisy bars.
But sometimes they can be annoying if you don’t need or want them while watching Amazon Prime Video. Maybe someone in your family has turned them on, maybe it’s a bug or maybe they’re on by default, it doesn’t matter, we’re here to show you how to turn them off.
Want to know how to turn off subtitles on other streaming services? Check out our guides on how to turn off subtitles on Disney+ and how to turn off subtitles on Netflix.
On mobile with the Prime Video app
Managing subtitles in the Prime Video app is particularly easy and a great place to start if your subtitles keep popping up, especially if you’re using a mobile device. While the layout and interface may differ slightly on other platforms, the basic rules and what to keep in mind remain the same, so you should still be able to use this guide as a guide. Below we’ll go over some of the other Prime Video platforms where things are a little different.
Step 1: Open the Amazon Prime Video app and start playing the show of your choice. After the subtitles appear, immediately pause the video.
Step 2 – Look at the top right corner of the screen. Here you will see several icons to manage the appearance of the video. The one in the middle looks like a speech bubble: select it.
Step 3: A small menu will appear with two different sections, Subtitle and Audio. Low Subtitle menu, you will see options for both Off and English CC/Subtitles (or other languages you may be seeing). choose Off.
Step 4 – If subtitles are already disabled but still show up, which can sometimes happen with this error, switch to Subtitle and then back to Off.
These steps should remove subtitles from everything you watch. We also suggest making sure your Prime Video app is fully up to date. If the problem persists, try removing the app entirely and reinstalling it to see if that helps. There is no guarantee that this error or mistake will not happen again, but if it does, you will be prepared to deal with it.
With Fire TV Remote
If you have an Amazon Fire device, such as a Fire TV Stick or Cube, connected to your TV, then it probably came with a remote. If you’re comfortable using the remote, you can also turn off closed captioning this way, which might be easier if you’re in front of the TV.
Step 1 – Pause the title you are watching once more. Now look at your Fire TV Stick. One of the top buttons on the right should be three lines, settings menu icon. Press this button.
Step 2: In the menu that appears, select Subtitle.
Step 3 – In the subtitle section, it will probably show something like this English [CC], use the select button again. This should disable subtitles. Again, turning subtitles on and off can often fix subtitle errors.
Step 4 – These steps may vary slightly as Fire TV interfaces may vary, but the end goal remains the same. If you can’t find it Subtitlelook for the menu called Subtitle.
With Prime Video on game console
Many users have the Prime Video app on their game console to make watching TV easier. In this case, you’ll use similar steps to the Fire TV Stick, except on a game controller instead of a dedicated remote.
In the controller, Break is usually the bottom button on your dial, the x either AND, depending on your console. From here, use the joysticks to navigate to the subtitles menu, just above the x-ray information. choose Subtitlethen make sure they are rotated Off.

What is the difference between subtitles and descriptions?
We thought we’d take a last minute here to clear up any confusion about subheadings and headings, as they can often look the same but are very different. Subtitles are there to provide a translation of spoken dialogue from a movie, TV show, or other video. Although useful for the hearing impaired, it assumes that the viewer can hear the dialogue and action on the screen, but simply cannot understand the language.
On the other hand, subtitles are there specifically for deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers to give them a verbatim transcript of not only the dialogue, but also the actions, sounds, and music that happen on the screen.
