How to turn off the Apple TV app’s auto-play previews on an Apple TV

Apple TV — the hardware — is one of the best streaming devices money can buy, giving you access to your favorite streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video, as well as apps, games and more. But another reason someone might use an Apple TV device is the Apple TV app itself. Not only is it the hub from which you access the Apple TV+ streaming service and all its original movies, TV shows and live sports, it can also act as an aggregator to help you find shows and movies on other services.

If you do use the Apple TV app, you might find the auto-play video previews that appear on the Apple TV home page or in the Apple TV app itself to be really annoying. First, if your sound is turned up, they can speak up and scare you. Plus, maybe you just want to scroll at your own pace and don’t like being shown content. Also, if you have small children sitting around waiting for you to come back with popcorn for movie night, you don’t want them to be exposed to previews of scary content like Enfield Poltergeist. Or worse… Morning show.

If you turn this off, you’ll stop previews from autoplaying in several places, and we’ll explain it all to you. But just to be clear, this does not affect autoplay previews in any other streaming apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. They have their own steps to disable them.

Autoplay video previews on the Apple TV home screen

Before we get started, it’s helpful to explain the various features of autoplay video previews on Apple TV, starting with the home screen. All your apps like Netflix, Hulu, Apple Music and yes, Apple TV are located here. If you use the Apple TV app, you’ve probably put it at the top row of your most used apps for convenience.

With autoplay video preview enabled On, and the Apple TV app icon in the top row is selected, any content that has a video preview (not all do), whether it’s the original Apple TV+ or from other sources, will automatically play the video preview, but without sound. By swiping up on the Apple TV remote, previews are displayed full-screen and played with audio in full glory.

Enable video preview with autoplay Off disables video previews when the icon is currently selected, and photos of suggested shows and movies will scroll as usual. But swiping up is like saying “I still want to see video views”, in which case flip-Off autoplay is overridden and anything with a video preview will play full screen and with sound.

Autoplay video previews within the Apple TV app

It’s similar in the Apple TV app with auto previews turned on On. In the Watch Now section, all content that has a video preview will play, with sound. On the TV+ tab, it’s all original content, so everything will play automatically with a preview. Sports, Shop and Library do not show video previews.

Turn on the autoplay preview feature Off disables autoplay of all video previews in the Watch Now and TV+ sections within the Apple TV app, and there will only be photos and titles to scroll through.

Now that we’ve got all that out of the way, here are the steps to turn off the autoplay video preview feature.
