Google Search Generative Experience, or SGE, is a tool in development to make finding information faster and easier on Google search. It includes an AI summary of some of your search results at the top of the page, giving you faster access to the information you’re looking for, at least in theory.
If you want to try it yourself, here’s how to use Google SGE.
Note: Google Search Labs is only available to select users in the US and in English only.
Sign up for Google EMS
As of this writing, Google SGE is under development, so only those who have been granted access by Google can play with it. If you want such access, you will need to apply for the waiting list.
Step 1 – Open Chrome and go to the Google Labs page. Alternatively, look for the Labs icon at the top of the Chrome browser. It looks like a canon bottle. Select it.
Step 2 – Choose Blue Join the waiting list button in the middle of the page.
Step 3: Enter your information, if required. If not, just wait for the email notification to let you know when you have access.
How to use Google EMS
Once you’re on the waitlist, you’ll eventually gain access to Search Labs, after which you can start using Google SGE.
Step 1: Open the Chrome browser on whatever device you are using.
Step 2: Go to Google Search and search for something. SGE works best with questions, but can also answer standard searches.
Step 3: You will have to wait a few seconds. Google’s SGE is not as fast as current standard search results. However, after a few seconds, you should see an AI-generated summary at the top of the first page of results, along with a few tabs that link you to sources and any possible follow-up questions you might want to ask.
Google SGE is not the fastest or smartest AI tool. But ChatGPT with plugins could steal that crown.
