How to use the depth effect on your iOS 16 lock screen

For many years, the home and lock screens of Apple’s iPhone have remained largely unchanged; that is, up to iOS 14 and iOS 16. With iOS 14, users were finally able to do some home screen customizations using custom app icons through the Shortcuts app. iOS 16 enriched the lock screen with various customization options, apart from adding widgets.

One of the advantages of customizing the lock screen for iOS 16 is the depth effect that you can apply to most photo backgrounds. Here’s how to add depth to your iOS 16 lock screen with just a few taps!

How to Get a Depth Effect on iOS 16 Lock Screen

The depth effect on the iOS 16 lock screen can work with almost any image, not just portrait mode images. The image also doesn’t have to be a photo you’ve taken yourself; even images you’ve saved from somewhere else online can be used with the depth effect, though final results may vary as some images work better than others.

Step 1 – On the lock screen (when unlocked), touch and hold anywhere on the screen to open the lock screen switcher.

Step 2: Tap blue plus sign button to add a new lock screen.

Step 3 – Tap Photos to find the image you want to use as wallpaper, or touch one of the suggested photos.

Touch and hold the lock screen to open the lock screen picker, then select add new, then browse for a wallpaper to use

Step 4 – If necessary, use multi-touch gestures to zoom in and out and crop the image for your lock screen.

Step 5: Choose Three points in the bottom right corner and check depth effect was chosen to achieve the effect.

Step 6 – Optionally, if you want to change the filter on the background image, swipe left and right to cycle through the available options.

Step 7 – Tap To add add that lock screen to save it.

Once you've selected your image, use multi-touch gestures to pan and crop if necessary, tap the button in the bottom right corner and make sure Depth Effect is selected

Tips to make the depth effect look great

Not all images will work with the depth effect on the iOS 16 lock screen. For best results, we recommend an image that has a clearly defined subject in the foreground and that you can easily align with the weather widget.

If the image is already too big when you set it as wallpaper, it won’t work well because you can’t make it smaller. You also can’t zoom in too much because it will remove the depth effect. It’s a fickle beast, so while it should work with any picture, your mileage may vary.

Another important thing to note is that if you decide you want widgets on your lock screen, the depth effect is automatically disabled. So you have to choose between an informative lock screen or one that looks great with depth. It’s a stupid limitation imposed by Apple for some reason, but that’s the way it is. If you end up with too many lock screens because of this, don’t worry! You can also remove lock screens if you change your mind.

Refresh your lock screen with iOS 16

The depth effect is a great touch for customizing your lock screen with iOS 16 and it’s great to see it as an option. While it’s not perfect, with multiple lock screens to choose from, it’s great if you want to keep things simple.
