HP Envy x360 13 vs. Dell XPS 13: the best tiny laptop?

The laptop market is starting to lean towards 14-inch laptops and moving away from 13-inch laptops, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great examples of the latter. The Dell XPS 13 9315 and the HP Envy x360 13 are worthy models.

Both laptops are relatively affordable and offer excellent performance, build, and amenities. But only one can be crowned the best. Who wins in this matchup?

Both laptops are similarly priced, right where you might call them slightly expensive budget laptops or mid-range machines. The Envy x360 13 starts at $900 for a Core i5-1230U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512G SSD, and a 13.3-inch 16:10 Full HD+ IPS touchscreen. The most you’ll spend is $1,300 for a Core i7-125oU, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 2.8K OLED panel.

The XPS 13 9315 has fewer configurations available. It starts at $850 for a Core i5-1230U, 8GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and a Full HD+ non-touch IPS display. At the high end, it’s $1,399 for a Core i7-1250U, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and the same touchscreen.

You get more RAM on the higher end with the XPS 13 9315 for $100 more, but the Envy x360 13 gives you a beautiful OLED display. We give the victory in prices and configuration to HP.

The XPS 13 9315 has been completely redesigned, omitting the glass or carbon fiber palm rest and replacing it with an all-aluminum body in Sky or Umber colors. It has kept its elegant exterior, but has a simpler and more modern design. It’s an attractive laptop, if very minimalist. The Envy x360 13 is more extravagant, with intricate angles that complement simple lines, as well as Natural Silver and Nightfall Black color schemes. It’s also pretty minimalist, so while it looks different to the XPS 13, neither can be characterized as looking better. The XPS 13 9315 uses smaller display bezels, giving it a more modern feel.

The XPS x360 13’s large bottom—required to accommodate foldable 2-in-1 convertible, tent, media, and tablet modes—makes it a deeper laptop, and it’s also thicker and heavier. The differences aren’t huge, though, and both laptops are small enough to be easy to transport.

Both laptops have a rigid build, with no bends, bends, or twists. That’s great to see considering the reasonable prices. Each has a hinge that can be opened with one hand and they have the same general build quality.

Both also have excellent keyboards, with plenty of key spacing and pretty keys. Its switches are fast, precise, and comfortable for long typing sessions. The same can be said for its similarly sized mechanical touchpads, which are comfortable and accurate. The biggest difference is that the Envy x360 13 comes standard with a touchscreen and supports Windows Inking-compatible pen input.

Connectivity is furthered by the Envy x360 13, which offers two USB-A ports in addition to its two Thunderbolt 4 ports, plus a microSD card reader and 3.5mm audio jack. The XPS 13 only offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Both devices feature the latest wireless connectivity available.

Finally, the Envy x360 13 uses a 5MP webcam that can record 1080p video, which is a huge improvement over the 720p version of the XPS 13 9315. Both have infrared cameras that support Windows 11 Hello.

Performance

Both notebooks use Intel’s 12th generation U-series CPU at 9 watts with 10 cores (two performance and eight efficient) and 12 threads. The only difference is in the maximum frequency of the Turbo, so we should not expect big differences in performance.

However, the Envy x360 13 fared much better in our benchmarks, whether in Balanced Mode or Performance Mode. Both laptops are fast enough for typical productive workflows, but the Envy has a lot more headroom for more demanding users. With only integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, neither laptop offers a good gaming experience.

The only display option Dell offers with the XPS 13 9315 is a Full HD+ IPS touch or non-touch panel. It scored well as a top productivity display according to our colorimeter, with above-average brightness and contrast.

But HP offers a 2.8K OLED display that’s much sharper, delivering extremely wide and accurate colors, plenty of brightness, and deep OLED contrast. It’s a much better screen not only for productive work, but for media creators and consumers as well. And it’s available for just $60 more than the standard IPS offer.

Portability

The XPS 13 9315 clearly benefited from its slower CPU, as it delivered much better battery life during our web browsing test despite the smaller battery. We didn’t put it through our video playback test, but with its lower-resolution IPS display, it probably fared better than the Envy x360 13 with its higher-resolution OLED panel. Both laptops are easy to transport, but the XPS 13 9315 will last you longer on a single charge.

Speed, flexibility and display quality give HP the win

Both are excellent laptops for the price, offering outstanding build quality with good productivity performance and battery life, great keyboards and trackpads, and a miniaturized body.

But the Envy x360 13 does have some advantages. For one, it’s faster and more flexible thanks to its 360-degree convertible 2-in-1 shape. It also has better connectivity and its available OLED screen is far superior. The XPS 13 9315 gets props for its better battery life, but overall, the Envy x360 13 is a more well-rounded, better-value laptop.
