Hydroxychloroquine long course does not protect against serious forms of Covid-19

The French study does not enter into the preventive role of the prolonged use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine against Covid-19.

Patients treated “for a long time” with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, especially for autoimmune diseases, were no less affected by severe forms of Covid-19 during the epidemic, according to a French study published on Tuesday.

This study, carried out by Epi-lighthouse, a structure that brings together the Medicines Agency (MSNA) and health insurance, based on the data of the latter (especially the return of medicines and medical records from hospitals (hospitalization dates, diagnoses, medical procedures and medicines…) that affect almost 55,000 patients, “does not suggest a preventive role for the use of synthetic antimalarials (APS) – a long course on the risk of hospitalization, intu covid-19-related illness or death,” the authors conclude.

“Although the observational study does not allow a firm conclusion on the lack of benefit of the synthesis of antimalarial drugs for the prevention of a severe form of Covid-19, these results speak in favor of the preventive use of hydroxychloroquine in the population, including the population that is at higher risk, and outside of specific therapeutic trials,” the researchers insist.

“All people who received at least six grants for synthetic antimalarial drugs (hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine) between January 1, 2019 and February 15, 2020, the last one during the last quarter of 2019 or early 2020” were studied. Hydroxychloroquine, a derivative of the antimalarial drug chloroquine, is specifically prescribed in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as lupus and/or rheumatoid arthritis.

Several studies are consistent

The results even highlighted “an unexpected number of Covid-19-related hospitalizations, intubations and deaths among patients in long-term PHC compared to the general French population.” But “the analyzes performed suggest that this surrique is explained by features associated with the underlying chronic pathology” of these patients, “including concomitant oral steroid therapy, rather than APS exposure itself.”

Most clinical trials testing hydroxychloroquine were halted at the end of May, after the publication of a negative study in the medical journal Lancet (retracted after suspicions of fraud), and then after the results of the large British trial, Recovery, in early June, according to which hydroxychloroquine shows “no beneficial effect” for Covid-19 patients.
