I ordered an iPhone 14 with only 128GB of storage, and you should too

In the meaningful words of Tim Cook, Good morning! It’s officially iPhone 14 pre-order day, and in typical Apple fashion, the pre-order experience seems to be everywhere. Some people, like me, have a pretty good time going in and out with their purchases. Other people took to Twitter to complain about incorrect shipping addresses, faulty card loaders, a dysfunctional exchange system, and more.

But assuming the technical aspects of Apple’s website/app work and you can choose your preferred iPhone 14 configuration, you’ll soon have a big decision to make: how much storage do you need in your new iPhone 14?

Choosing the storage you want is as simple as clicking or tapping the amount you want, but therein lies the rub. How much storage space do you have? In fact need? It’s tempting to go for 128GB because it’s the cheapest option, but will it be enough? Will you regret not spending the money on 256GB, 512GB, or even 1TB after a year or two of regular use?

This is a question without a clear answer. Everyone uses their phone differently and has different storage needs. If you’ve read several guides explaining the storage differences and still can’t decide, let me give you some simple advice: just buy the 128GB iPhone 14 and be done with it. That’s what I did with my 128GB iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I’m happy to save the extra $100 it would have cost me to go with 256GB.

“But Joe, is 128 GB really enough storage in 2022?” For people who download numerous albums for offline use, dozens of podcasts, and various mobile games, probably not. But let’s say you don’t download a lot of large files and save them on your phone. In that case, you can still get by with 128GB.

I’ve been using the 128 GB iPhone 13 Pro for about a year. As for my storage today, I only use 70.3 GB of the 128 GB allocated. That’s with 4.8 GB of downloaded music, 2.67 GB of Apple Photos data, 3.14 GB of iMessage data, and over 190 currently installed apps. I don’t have any podcasts or graphics intensive games downloaded. Besides a few downloaded travel albums, all my music, podcasts, movies, and TV shows stream over a data connection.

That kind of usage might not reflect how you use your phone, but I’m willing to bet on it. are people reading this who can relate to using your phone in this way. If you have a lot of apps like Twitter and Microsoft Teams, save all your photos to a cloud storage service, stream your audio/video, and don’t have multiple captions like devil: immortal and call of duty: mobile installed, 128 GB is more than doable in 2022.

The only potential downside to the 128GB storage capacity is seen in the Pro model. Along with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, only the 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB models can record 4K ProRes video at 30fps. If you want to record 4K video that you can later edit and manipulate in a video editor, this is a valid limitation to consider. But for almost everyone else, it’s something that shouldn’t have any impact in everyday use.

That’s what it ultimately boils down to. For content creators, vloggers, hardcore gamers, etc. I like them and need larger storage options if you are a “power user”. But for people like me who aren’t that picky about their smartphone, don’t feel bad about going with 128GB when picking up your iPhone 14.

There will almost certainly be plenty of space, you get (mostly) the same features, and you’ll have more money in your pocket than all your friends who were convinced they needed 256GB or more. Also, you can use that extra money for some iPhone 14 cases, which you should definitely get.
