Usually you expect the new generation of graphics cards to outperform the previous generation, but this time we’re in a precarious situation. Nvidia’s recent RTX 4060 Ti was not well received, and cheaper last-gen options like the RX 6700 XT looked more and more attractive as prices fell.
I ran both cards on my test bench to see which was the better buy, and it’s a clear winner. However, there are some important considerations to take into account before choosing any GPU.
Where is the value?

RX 6700 XT and RTX 4060 Ti should be in different GPU classes. However, the RX 6700 XT is from AMD’s previous generation, so its nearly $500 list price has dropped significantly, competing well with the RTX 4060 Ti’s $400 list price.
Considering how new the RTX 4060 Ti is, you’ll be spending at least $400 on one. There were rumors of price cuts, but they didn’t materialize in the US Fortunately, many list-priced options are available at retailers like Newegg and Micro Center. If you want an overclocked model or a card with RGB, you can spend upwards of $470.
Stock of the RX 6700 XT is running low, but I’ve found models as cheap as $310 online. Some models are closer to $350, and I even found one on sale for $390, but you can expect to spend $310-$350 if you buy one now.
Fortunately, there are many more stocks of the updated RX 6750 XT. It’s a slightly faster version of the RX 67o0 XT, by 5-10% depending on the game, but you can make up most of that difference by overclocking the base model. But if you’re interested in the upgraded model, you won’t spend much more. The cheapest option I found was $330, but models are in the $360-$400 range.
The clear winner for value is the RX 6700 XT. It’s $50 to $90 cheaper than the RTX 4060 Ti, and as I’ll explore in the next section, it offers very similar performance. Price aside, its value is better because of the VRAM configuration.
It’s usually not worth comparing the specs between two graphics cards from two different brands, but the RX 6700 XT has a unique advantage over the RTX 4060 Ti. It comes with 12 GB of video memory, while the RTX 4060 Ti comes with only 8 GB. The RX 6700 XT also has a larger 192-bit memory bus (compared to 128-bit on the RTX 4060 Ti), which offers more memory bandwidth overall.
This affects performance, as you can see in my tests. The RX 6700 XT scales to higher resolutions better than the RTX 4060 Ti, making it a solid choice for 1440p gaming. Plus, the increasing VRAM demands of modern games mean it’s much better equipped to handle new releases, while the RTX 4060 Ti seems destined to be limited by its 8GB of memory.
Is the RTX 4060 Ti faster than the RX 6700 XT?

Yes, it is, but there is more to the story. As you can see from my 1080p benchmarks above, the RTX 4060 Ti is slightly faster than the RX 6700 XT on average. There are some huge gains, like a 28% increase. red Dead Redemption 2, but most of the differences are more subtle. For example, the RTX 4060 Ti is about 5% faster Horizon Zero Dawn.
Still, it’s not a clear win for the RTX 4060 Ti. IN Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Return, The RTX 4060 Ti and RX 6700 XT produced almost identical frames per second. The RX 6700 XT also has a huge advantage of 32%. the last of us part 1 highlighting just how limited the 8GB framebuffer on the RTX 4060 Ti can be.

Things change a lot at 1440p. The marks set by the RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p are down to a few frames, while the RX 6700 XT maintains a solid lead in The last of us part 1. There are differences: the RX 6700 XT is slightly faster horizon Force 5, while the RTX 4060 Ti takes a similar lead cyberpunk 2077 – but the cards offer nearly identical experiences.
What’s interesting is how the RX 6700 XT closes the gap at 1440p compared to 1080p. Its 12 GB of VRAM helps in demanding games like the last of us part 1 but also allows the card to maintain high performance as the resolution increases.
In fact, Nvidia advertised the RTX 4060 Ti as a 1080p graphics card. However, in the previous generation, the $400 price tag was firmly focused on 1440p, and there’s no reason for that to change this time around. A GPU like the RX 6700 XT is proof of that, delivering excellent 1440p gaming performance even for less than the RTX 4060 Ti.
Considering the price, the choice is the RX 6700 XT. This is even more true if you can find a deal on the RX 6750 XT, which offers a minor performance boost over the base model.

The RX 6700 XT is a better value than the RTX 4060 Ti, but that assessment changes when ray tracing is taken into account. As you can see from my 1080p ray tracing benchmarks above, the RTX 4060 Ti is around twice as fast as the RX 6700 XT in some games.
This does not mean that the RX 6700 XT is defective. In less demanding ray tracing titles such as Return and resident evil 4, the graphics card still offers playable frame rates. However, in the most demanding situations, the RX 6700 XT falls far behind, while the RTX 4060 Ti maintains a solid performance.

At 1440p the situation is worse. The RX 6700 XT closes the gap resident evil 4, mainly because of how demanding that game’s VRAM is, but it still has a clear place in other titles. It can also make a significant difference in some cases. for example in Return, The RTX 4060 Ti delivers a crisp 60 frames per second (fps), allowing you to play around with ray tracing without scaling up. The RX 6700 XT cannot achieve that mark.
I ran all of these tests without the super resolution features. The RTX 4060 Ti has access to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), while the RX 6700 XT can use AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), and you’d do well to turn one of those on if you plan to run ray tracing. Titles
The Nvidia GPU has the upper hand here. DLSS not only looks better than FSR, but the RTX 4060 Ti also supports DLSS frame generation. The Return, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts Legacy they all support frame generation, which uses AI to predict every other frame.
It vastly improves performance and allows the RTX 4060 Ti to reach higher levels of fluidity in the most demanding games. While the RX 6700 XT is the better option, there’s no doubt that the RTX 4060 Ti is the better option if you want to turn on ray tracing and access features like DLSS 3 in the latest games.
Should you buy the RTX 4060 Ti or the RX 6700 XT?
As I’ve said in the past, Nvidia’s latest GPUs are essentially little DLSS 3 machines. The RTX 4060 Ti is no different. Judging by its GPU strengths, it’s right up there with the RX 6700 XT and offers similar performance for a higher price. and a memory setting that could have serious implications for future games.
The RTX 4060 Ti still has the advantage, mainly for newer, more prestigious games that have all the visual advantages. Unfortunately, these are the same games that are likely to have VRAM issues, putting the RTX 4060 Ti at a disadvantage.
For my money, the RX 6700 XT is the GPU to buy. It does have caveats, like poor ray tracing performance and no DLSS, but it’s a clear choice in the vast majority of games. The big draw, though, is its 12GB of VRAM, allowing the card to easily scale up to 1440p and handle newer builds with lots of video memory.
