Gabrielle Union has shared the details of her first marriage to professional soccer star Chris Howard.
The Being Mary Jane actress admitted on Monday’s Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard that her first marriage was just awful.
She freely admits that neither she nor Howard were committed to their marriage.
“In our first marriage, neither of us felt that marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she noticed.
“Part of it was just following his activities, like, ‘Oh, is that what you’re doing?'” Union added. You’re going to experience this,” and I suddenly felt like I was entitled to it too. She felt like the fruits of wealth as she paid all the bills and worked tirelessly.”
She continued, “Like my father before me, I believed that whoever has the most can do what they want, which is what I thought,” attributing the infidelity to the way her father handled things. “It was just dysfunctional from the start.”
In Florida, Union and Howard had a party in 1999; they then married there in 2001. However, it only took 2005, four years later, for them to officially separate.
According to the LA’s Finest star, they shouldn’t have gotten married after only dating.
However, the therapist asked how Union and Howard were progressing after the courtship phase. “AND [she said] We should probably find a way to part amicably…” she replied. Because you have nothing in common, you have no values or principles, argues the Union.
Currently married to former NBA player Dwyane Wade, Union and Wade have a four-year-old daughter named Kaavia. She is also a stepmother to Wade’s three children from previous relationships.
