About twenty artists participated in the project and created a mural of approximately 100 meters in the very commercial Rue Sainte-Catherine.

It is an initiative presented as a world first: in Montreal, a dozen artists put the final brushstroke on Wednesday with a huge mural “Black Lives Matter”, painted in the French translation “THE LIFE OF THE BLACK.ES ACCOUNT”.

The roughly 100-meter-long mural echoes similar achievements in English, particularly in Washington and New York, following the May 25 death of George Floyd, an African-American man who was choked to death by a white police officer in minneapolis.

The Montreal project has been active all summer in support of black communities and their demands, according to organizers. The giant multicolored letters were captured in a lane of Sainte-Catherine Street, pedestrianized during the summer season, in the center of the Quebec metropolis.

“Racism, disparity, crosses borders”

“The idea came about because we saw the first mural ever done, it was in Washington, and we were immediately arrested as a message. It was still strong enough,” says Carla Beauvais, co-founder of the Dynasty Foundation, which created the project.

This association supports people from the black community in the media, arts and culture. “Racism, disparity, it crosses borders,” she added. Not even Marcelle Mueth, a co-art project, opened an eye, in the heart of the “i”, yellow and orange, the word “life”.

“As my ‘stay awake’ T-shirt says, it’s a message that’s important to me because it’s important to stay awake, be careful and aware of the problems we experience personally, but also the problems of society,” he explained. the artist.

“Well done for your work”

Wearing a mask on her face, Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante goes to see the fresco, once nearly complete, in the middle of the afternoon. “Well done on her job,” she launched into the performers, most of whom were also masked. Montreal is the epicenter of the pandemic in Quebec, the province that has identified more than half of the country’s 108,000 coronavirus cases.

After the death of George Floyd, tens of thousands of people protested in major Canadian cities, including Montreal, against racism and police violence, denouncing it as racial discrimination in the French-speaking province of Quebec.
