India won gold in the recently concluded men’s kabaddi final at the 2023 Asian Games after defeating Iran. However, it was a match marked by controversy as the game was stopped for about an hour after the teams staged protests regarding a certain rule of the game. Even though the game continued and India won, that didn’t stop netizens from taking to X and sharing their thoughts. While some praised the Indian players for taking a stand, a few claimed that the confusion was due to “poor officiating”.

What started it all?
With a minute left in the game, India’s Pawan Sehrawat went into do-or-die action. He went off the field and did not make any contact with the Iranian defenders during the attack. At this point, the Iranian referees tried to push Sehrawat out, but confusion broke out that made it unclear whether they had succeeded in overpowering the Indian player or not.
At first, the Iranian team was awarded a point, but the decision was met with protest by the Indian team. After review, the umpires ruled in favor of India, but this time the Iranian team protested. Meanwhile, E Bhaskaran, India’s selector, asked that if the new rule was applied, why did the umpire change the decision after India’s review?
What are the rules?
“If the defender or defenders who touched the ground out of bounds are holding the attacker, the attacker will be called NOT OUT. Only a defender or defenders who have gone outside the field of play will be declared out,” says the IKF rule.
The PKL rule says: “If the robber enters the lobby, then the robber ends there and the robber is eliminated.” One point is awarded to the defending team unless one of their defenders also leaves the mat.”
What happened next?
After much deliberation, the umpires ruled in favor of Iran and at that moment the Indian team stopped playing and sat on the mat. The drama continued with protests by the Iranian team against the referee’s next decision. This chaotic situation led to the temporary suspension of the match for about an hour. However, in the end it was ruled in India’s favor and the match continued. In the end, the Indian team defeated the Iranian team to secure the gold medal in the 2023 Asian Games.
