Infinity pool it’s just as wild and unpredictable as its trailers suggest. The film, which serves as writer-director Brandon Cronenberg’s sequel to his 2020 feature film Holderis an uncontrollable descent into a dark, Faustian alternate reality where the world’s richest tourists truly don’t have to worry about ever facing the consequences of their worst actions.
The film follows James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em Foster (Cleopatra Coleman), a wealthy couple who decide to go on vacation to a fictional foreign country where they are advised never to leave the confines of their resort. The couple went there in the hope that James would finally be able to find inspiration for his second novel and therefore stop living solely on the money Em gets from his rich publisher father. Unfortunately, when a vacationing couple, Alban (Jalil Lespert) and Gabi Bauer (Mia Goth), convince James and Em to leave the resort with them, things quickly go wrong.

On the way back from their ill-advised excursion, James accidentally runs over and kills a native boy. The next morning, he and Em are arrested and briefly held in a dilapidated, crumbling government building. While there, James learns that the sentence for manslaughter is u Infinity poolHis fictional foreign country is death. However, James himself was not executed for his crimes. Instead, Emma’s wealth allows him to participate in a federal program approved only for tourists in the country – in which James allows an identical physical copy of himself to be made and then executed in his stead.
When he returns to his and Emma’s resort, James realizes that he isn’t the only person present who took part in the Infinity poolstrange cloning process. Gabi and Alban also did it years ago, and after participating in an illegal night of crime with them and their rich friends, James rushes headlong down a nightmarish path of hedonism and debauchery from which there is no turning back. His increasingly strange behavior not only isolates him from Em, who understandably returns home to the US at the first opportunity, but leaves him completely unprepared for Infinity poolsurreal third act.
In the final part of the film, James realizes that, despite participating in several drug-fueled orgies and nights of crime with him, Gabi and her friends don’t really care about him. Unfortunately, when he tries to put an end to their escapades by secretly flying home, he is stopped on his way out of the country by a gun-wielding Gabi and her friends.

Goth, who seems to have reached a whole new level of insane screen transcendence over the past year, chews up and spits out each of her lines in Infinity pool — but never more so than when she makes James walk down the road in front of her and Albano’s car while she reads aloud to him the terrible reviews of his first book.
In the final major sequence of the film, Gabi demands that James “finish [his] transformation” by beating his doppelgänger, whom she calls “the dog”, to death. Despite a brief attempt at resistance, James ends up doing just that. The act leaves him curled up and sobbing like a baby — a metaphor made literal when Gabi offers him a moment of comfort by wrapping her arms around him and nursing him (yes, verbatim).

Infinity pool then ends with Gabi, Alban and the rest of their friends casually flying back to their homes as if nothing bad or unusual happened on their trip. Unbeknownst to them, James stays. He sneaks back to the ground of the film’s gated central resort and sits in the rain as the island’s waves violently lap its shores. As for the final pictures, Infinity poolThe final shot of James sitting forlornly in the middle of a rainstorm is both appropriately nihilistic and darkly humorous.

Regardless of how effective the overall story of the movie may or may not be, it’s also the perfect way to Infinity pool Until the end. For a film about how the world’s elite are allowed to live a lifestyle without consequence, it makes a lot of sense that Skarsgård’s James, whose wealth is entirely derived from his wife’s father, can’t shake it Infinity poolsinful adventures in the same way that Gabi, Alban and their other friends from the bourgeoisie can. Only real devils can have fun in hell and get out unscathed.
