Ingenious new charger uses gyroscopes and kinetic energy to juice up your gadgets

HandEnergy: your pocket power generator

Everyone has had the experience of running out of battery on their phone or mobile device at a completely inconvenient time. But even if you have a charging cable, what do you do if there’s no outlet nearby?

The good people behind the new HandEnergy Kickstarter campaign have a solution. They’ve developed what looks a bit like a Poké Ball, but is actually a spherical pocket power generator that allows users to charge anything from smartphones and tablets to cameras and flashlights, using only their own body’s power.

“You may be familiar with a wrist exercise device called the Powerball, which is a powerful handheld gyroscope,” co-founder Alex Novik told Digital Trends. “We came up with the idea of putting a battery, a metal coil, and magnets inside a similar device to produce electricity. We spent a year developing it, trying to find the best materials we could. After a dozen prototypes, we finally came up with one we were happy with.”

HandEnergy users begin by winding the starter ring. This transmits a pulse to the rotor, at which point the user can begin to rotate the device with their wrist to keep the rotor spinning. With an average speed of 5,000 revolutions per minute, HandEnergy’s magnetic rotor transfers mechanical power to generate electrical current, which charges the built-in batteries.

Once everything is charged up, simply plug in the USB and transfer the charge to whatever device you want to add some power to.

“We don’t necessarily think this will be something you’ll use every day, as it takes about an hour to get to full capacity,” Novik continued. “But it’s small enough to fit in your pocket and you can use it anywhere if you find yourself somewhere without plugs or electricity.”

The team behind HandEnergy originally met on a clean energy web forum, and Novik said they have many other ideas for future products that can generate clean energy using the human body. For now though, the best way to support the initiative is to pre-order HandEnergy on their Kickstarter page.

The “early bird” edition of the device will set you back $73 and is scheduled to ship in May 2017.
