The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the inclusion of cricket and four other sports in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Several games will return, while others will make their LA28 Olympic debut. Cricket will return for the first time since 1900 and will be played in the short T20 format.

The 141st session of the IOC was held in Mumbai, India from October 15 to 17, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Los Angeles Olympics 2028: Cricket included and list of sports

Cricket will return to the Olympics in 2028 after a century. The popular bat and ball game was last included in the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900. These are the additional sports approved by the IOC at its 141st session.

  • Flag football
  • Lacrosse (sixes
  • Squash

All five sports were voted in one package with two negative votes by around 90 IOC members at the 141st session in Mumbai, India.

  • Baseball and softball have been part of the Olympic Games for several editions, most recently in Tokyo 2020. Baseball and softball are particularly popular in Japan and the US.
  • Cricket was last played at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900.
  • Lacrosse was included in the 1904 St Louis Olympics and the 1908 London Olympics.
  • Flag football and squash will make their debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“The selection of these five new sports is in keeping with American sports culture and will introduce iconic American sports to the world while bringing international sports to the United States. These sports will make the LA28 Olympic Games unique,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Their inclusion will allow the Olympic movement to tap into new communities of athletes and fans in the US and globally.”
