One of the most exciting features that arrived in last year’s iOS 16 release was a whole new level of customization for your lock screen. Instead of just letting you upload a static image, Apple has opened the door to let you create a display that cycles through your photo collections of friends, pets, and landscapes, see updated weather and astronomical conditions, and more.
The feature remains largely the same in iOS 17, although Apple made some nice changes in iOS 17.1 so that you can now choose any of your albums to display on the Photo Shuffle lock screen instead of being limited to fixed smart collections of people, pets , nature and cities. You can still set up multiple lock screens to cycle through, and that also now means multiple Photo Shuffle screens for selecting images from different albums. Because they can be set to appear automatically in different focus modes, you can set your iPhone to automatically switch between albums of professional photos at work and family photos at home.
While the new StandBy mode in iOS 17 means you may see your lock screen less often while your iPhone is charging, it only turns on when you turn the phone on its side. So you can still leave it upright on the charger and still enjoy the lock screen, which works especially well with the rich, always-on, full-color display on Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
While your home screen still only allows you to set a static photo to appear behind your app icons, you can now choose to blur that background or dress it up a bit with some filters. What’s even more fun is that your home screen wallpaper is paired with every lock screen you set, so it changes with each one. By default, you get a blurred version of the corresponding lock screen image, but you can still set it over any other image in your photo library as before.

How to set a custom home screen wallpaper when configuring the lock screen
When you create a new lock screen wallpaper or edit an existing one, your iPhone will offer a blurred version of the same wallpaper for your home screen wallpaper. Directs you to select this one with the highlight Set as a pair of wallpapers button, but you don’t have to accept it by default.
Step 1: On the iPhone lock screen, press and hold any empty space to open the lock screen picker.
Step 2: Create a new lock screen by selecting Plus sign in the lower right corner.

Step 4: When done, select To add (or Done if you are editing an existing lock screen). A preview of your lock screen and home screen background appears.

Step 5: Choose Customize your home screen to choose a different wallpaper for the home screen. A new view opens for editing the home screen background.
Step 6: From the options at the bottom, exit Couple selected (Original on iOS 16.0) to keep the same wallpaper as your lock screen; choose Color or Gradient to select a static background or select Photos to select another image from your photo library.
Step 7: The color and gradient options are preset to use a background that matches your lock screen background. To select a different color or gradient, select Color or Gradient button a second time to display the color picker.

Step 8: Choose Blur to choose whether to blur the home screen background. This option is only available when you use a matching lock screen wallpaper or custom photo; it will not be active when a color or gradient is used because then there is nothing to blur.
Step 9: Once you’ve customized the home screen wallpaper to your liking, select Done in the upper right corner.

How to change the current home screen wallpaper from the lock screen
In iOS 16.1, Apple made it easy to customize your home screen wallpaper directly from the lock screen without going through the lock screen settings first.
Step 1: On the iPhone lock screen, press and hold any empty space to open the lock screen picker.
Step 2: Swipe left or right to locate the lock screen for which you want to edit the corresponding home screen wallpaper.
Step 3: Choose Customize button below the lock screen image.
Step 4: Tap on the home screen background on the right. A view for editing the home screen background opens.
Step 5: Choose from the options at the bottom Couple (Original on iOS 16.0) to use the same wallpaper as the lock screen, Color or Gradient choose a static background or Photos to select another image from your photo library.
Step 6: If you are using Pair/Original or Photos, you can choose Blur to enable/disable image blur on the home screen.
Step 7: When done, select Done to return to the lock screen selector.
Step 8: Select the desired lock screen to exit the lock screen picker.

How to change your home screen wallpaper from the Settings app
You can also quickly choose a new home screen wallpaper for your current lock screen in the same way you set wallpapers in previous versions of iOS. This skips the step of opening the lock screen wallpaper editor and instead takes you directly to choosing your home screen wallpaper.
As long as you have iOS 16.1 or later (and you really should be by now), you can switch between different wallpaper pairs or add a new one by tapping + Add new wallpaper button.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Choose Wallpaper. A preview of your current lock screen and home screen wallpaper is displayed.
Step 3: Choose Customize button on the right, below the home screen background preview. A view for editing the home screen background opens.
Step 4: Choose from the options at the bottom Couple (Original on iOS 16.0) to use the same wallpaper as the lock screen, Color or Gradient choose a static background or Photos to select an image from your photo library.
Step 5: Choose Blur to enable/disable photo background blur.
Step 6: When you’re happy with your home screen background, select it Done in the upper right corner to save your selections and return to wallpaper settings.
If you’ve customized your wallpaper to use a color, gradient, or a separate photo and later decide you want to go back to using the paired wallpaper from the lock screen, repeat the steps above and select Couple option (or Original on iOS 16.0).
