Irma Garcia was one of two elementary school teachers killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School. A student who survived the shooting described the shooter. She explained: “She shot the door of the person next door. We have a door in the middle. He opened it. He walked in, crouched down a little bit and said, said, ‘It’s time for you to die.’
The attacker reportedly barricaded himself in the classroom and opened fire on the people inside. In the end, he killed Iram, her co-teacher, and the other 19 students.

Irma Garcia was married to her husband Joe Garcia. According to her relatives, they have known each other for more than 25 years and have been married for 24 years. They were high school sweethearts. However, not long after his wife’s memorial day of the cross, Joe suffered a heart attack and died due to the immense “sadness” he was experiencing.
Joe, who was 50 years old at the time of his death, had just returned to the family home after leaving flowers at the memorial for the victims outside Robb Elementary School.
He was in the kitchen and suddenly he got caught and fell no more than three minutes after sitting down in a chair with his family. One of his family members who was also in the house with the family jumped into action and gave him chest compressions until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital. He died there on May 26, 2022.
Irma and Joe had four children; Christian, 23 years old; Jose, 19 years old; Lyliana, 15 years old; and Alysandra, 12.
“His family was an all-American family,” said his nephew John Martinez. Washington Post. “They are great people. The whole family, they are all great people. They don’t deserve this.” Joe and Irma Garcia’s love story spanned a quarter century and included barbecues, music, scenic drives through the countryside, and four children.
Irma’s cousin Debra Austin said: “I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life for over 25 years was too much to bear.”
Joe worked at HEB supermarket and was a leader in his business. He was a long-time father and a loving husband.
In Irma’s teacher profile, she wrote: “I love barbecuing with my husband, listening to music and taking country cruises on the Concan. My oldest son, Cristian, is finishing up Navy boot camp, and my second son, José, is attending Texas State University. My oldest daughter Lyliana will be in second grade in high school and my youngest daughter Alysandra will be in seventh grade this year.”

Less than two hours after receiving the message, John received a call to inform him that his uncle had died after being rushed to hospital following an apparent heart attack.
On Twitter, John shed light on the relationship between his aunt and uncle. He said: “My Aunt Irma and Joe Garcia were high school sweethearts and left 4 beautiful children, their ages are 23, 19, 15 and the youngest is only 13, no child should have to go through this. My heart breaks for them.”
She also spoke about her Aunt Irma to the Washington Post, saying: “It wasn’t just her students. These were her children, and she risked her life. She lost her life to protect them. That’s the kind of person she was.”
Her cousin Debra started it GoFundMe which has raised $1.82 million as of this writing.

Irma Garcia taught at Robb Elementary School for 23 years. She taught 4th grade and loved her students as if she were her “second mother”. Irma herself spent her entire 23-year teaching career at Robb Elementary School. She worked with Eva Mireles for 5 years.
One of the surviving students said: “They were good teachers. They went ahead of my colleagues to help. To save them.”
